With the minor league season over, I think it's time we all put together a top 20 prospect list. With the high turn over of our prospects from the minor leagues to majors this year, this year's list should look very different.

Any player that has exhausted his rookie status is ineligible. That means Mark Reynolds no longer qualifies, but Justin Upton still does.(edit_ he's 13 at bats away from losing that rookie status, so i guess he shall be excluded from the list, unless someone can clarify this issue more)
Where do you rank a guy like Jarrod Parker, who has had excellent scouting reports on, but has yet to play in pro ball? So I'll take a stab at starting the list.

Top 10 hitters
1. Carlos Gonzalez
2 Gerardo Parra
3. Aaron Cunningham
4. Emilio Bonifacio
5. Alex Romero
6. Clayton Conner
7. Reynaldo Navarro
8. JavierBrito
9. James D'Antona
10. Bryan Byrne

Honorable Mentions: Cyle Hankerd, Jarrod Ball, Chris Rahl, Daniel Perales, Justin Brashear(hit .195 at south bend, but had a .395 OBP), Brad Miller

Top 10 Pitchers
1. Max Scherzer
2. Brett Anderson
3. Jarrod Parker
4. Esmerling Vazquez
5. Greg Smith
6. Matt Torra
7.Brooks Brown
8. Hector Ambriz
9. Matt Green
10.Dallas Buck

Honorable Mentions: Reid Mahon, Kyler Newby, Adam Howard, Josh Collmenter

FYI, Upton is 13 at bats from losing his "rookie" status. Most sites that rank prospects don't include guys that don't qualify as rookies.

I thought september didn't count towards service time... If that's the case, I suppose that would make CarGo our top prospect.

All though Jarrod Parker has yet to pitch in pro ball, I would have to say he's our number one pitching prospect, and number two prospect over all..

So who's number three? Sherzer, Anderson? Gerrardo Parra?

The at bats still count, regardless of when they come.

UHHH... i think Uptons september ABs dont count against "rookie status" but do count against service time. Semantics i guess...

So, it just depends how you want to play your list.

Fact is, Upton isnt a prospect anymore - he is a ML regular. I say, Lets put him aside for sake of discussion - but it isnt my discussion, so who cares what i say.

For the sake of the arguement, Upton isn't really a prospect anymore. So he'll be excluded from the discussion.

Ok guys, who's number three?

There are both service time (September doesn't count) and an AB restrictions on rookie status (as Shoewizard pointed out the ABs count). I hadn't been checking on it but I was under the impression that JU had been held out of enough games to keep under the thresholds. I guess not.

Quote:
To qualify for rookie status, a player must not have exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues, or accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the 25-player limit period, excluding time on the disabled list or in military service.

So even if a player hasn't had 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched, he may still have exhausted his rookie eligibility if he was on the Major League roster for more than 45 days, not counting days in September when the roster expands.

Brett Anderson should be # 2 and I would rank Parker lower then 3 but not lower then 6.

I don't know where you would put him, but I would think Esmerling Vasquez should be somewhere on that list, even if 9 or 10, based on his improving each season and having a great enough 2007 season to be recognized as "Best Minor League Pitcher" in the Dbacks' system.

I'm curious about D'Antona also. Does he deserve to be on the list?

Personally i think d'antona deserves to be on the list. He's what? 25?
what do you guys think of Clayton Conner?

Emilio would probably make this list. Cunningham is another guy... both are young.

The dbacks have a pretty strong crop of pitching prospects at this point.

Here's some name's i'll throw out there.

What do you guys think of Reynaldo Navarro? Alex Romero? Hectpr Ambriz? Brooks Brown? Matt Torra? Greg Smith?

I've seen Cunningham play twice and I like him a lot. He looks like he could turn into a solid major league regular(not a star, mind you, but a consistent guy in a lot of areas).

Emilio, Parker, CarGo, Anderson, Scherzer, Brown, Romero, and Cunnigham should all be on that list. Maybe Newby and Hankerd and of course, Esmerling Vazquez.

I updated the list, and split it into hitters and pitchers. What do you guys think? start debating.

Thanks Levski, I wasn't really sure how to rank these guys after the first few. Didn't realize eveland isn't a prospect anymore. I'm going to change it to your list.
