With Webb going tomorrow and Redman pitching for COL on Friday, we need to win tonight.

Jump on Morris in the first... and post a crooked number before he finds a way to survive.

If the D-backs can win one game in Pittsburgh and one in Colorado, the Rockies are eliminated, and the Phillies or Padres could only catch the D-backs if they win every on of their remaining games. If the D-backs can't do that much, they probably don't deserve to make the playoffs anyway.

If we lose the next two, and Colorado and San Diego win today and tomorrow, the standings on Friday morning would look like this:
Arizona 88-71
San Diego 88-71
Colorado 87-72
* * * * *
This sets up a strong possibility of a three way tie for first.
If San Diego wins 1 in Milwaukee, and we win 1 in Colorado, the final standings would be:
Arizona 89-73
San Diego 89-73
Colorado 89-73
* * * * *
But even if we win the next two, and get swept in Colorado, and San Diego wins two in Milwaukee, the final standings would be:
Arizona 90-72
San Diego 90-72
Colorado 90-72
* * * * *
If we go 1-1 over the next two days, there is no chance of a three way tie.
If Colorado sweeps over the weekend, San Diego would need two wins to lock us out of the playoffs otherwise there would be a playoff. If the coin flip for a division playoff applies to the wild card, the game would be played in Arizona.

In a Sept 7 article by Tom Singer, which is still available on MLB.com (click on "Octoberquest"), these are the coin flips that still apply today:
For a possible division playoff:
Mets at Phillies
Brewers at Cubs
Padres at DBacks
Rockies at DBacks
Rockies at Padres
* * * * *
For a possible wild card playoff:
Phillies at Padres
Padres at Rockies
Cubs at Padres
Phillies at Rockies
Rockies at Cubs
Phillies at Brewers
Brewers at Rockies
* * * * *
In that article, there is no mention of a coin flip involving the Dbacks for a wild card spot. Anyone have anything on that? I am assuming they would use the same as if it were a division playoff. |

I think we would do very well to WIN the next two games, because this weekend we're going into Colorado where the Rockies are riding the crest of a tidal wave that could drown us out. Otherwise, we might need help from Milwaukee just to get into a playoff for the wild card. |

Guys...they just have to win......it's that simple.
They can't back in. The other teams are too hot. |

That's it in the proverbial nutshell. Just like when a pack of runners or skiers is nearing the finish line, the one who puts on the big burst at the end will win.

Yes. That's what I meant. Tonight is the chance to start a 3 game winning streak and clinch everything before Saturday. The Friday game in COL is a great chance.

Years from now, you'll look back on this week as baseball excitement at it's very best. It's almost as if you were riding along with Indiana Jones looking for the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail, or the Lost Gold Mines of the Superstition Mountains. It's a fun ride and I hope we make it to October but if we don't, we've come a long way and just to be in the middle of this wild scramble to the finish line is the most fun I've had with our team in years. Don't know about the rest of you, but it's a thrill ride. Just hope we don't come up short.

Unnerving, ain't it?
I had to explain to my youngest last night why NOW we want them to win; when last week we wanted them to lose...

It's easy for us old and jaded guys to forget that for some of the younger posters, this is their first real pennant race. If you think this is stressful, wait til the playoffs start (if we make it, of course...). I got so nervous before Game 7 of the 01 World Series that I almost puked at Hi Tops before the game. lol

That's nothing. After game 5 of the WS (second blown save by Kim, third straight loss), I was so sick that I couldn't make it to work the next day. I just took a book, went to central park, and slept in the shades there like a bum...
