I'm thinking that this is a pretty solid move by ATL.

They pick up a Gold Glove level, switch hitting power bat at 1b ( for at least a year and a third ) and a solid LHP for the pen.

Put him in the line up with the Jones brothers ( synergy, baby! ) and this is a difference maker.

Fire away... Wink

BTW, "prospects" are not "diamonds." IMO, they're closer to drilling oil wells.

Few pay off but some do big time.

Being a Braves fan, I understand why JS did the trade. GM's and Managers are remembered for how many World Series they won, not how many playoff games they played in or World Series appearances. This is JS'S and Bobby Cox last ride and with the new owners allowing it, why not ? The past 3 deadlines have been very boring. I am happy we keep Yunel Escobar. Now if we can get rid of Scott Thorman it will be a great week.

I think if the Braves won the World Series this year, Bobby Cox would not return and Terry Pendleton would take over next year. I think that mainly due to the amount of jobs Terry Pendleton has declined that would further his baseball career to stay the hitting coach of the Braves. JS is the leading candidate to take over for Bud Selig when he leaves in 2009.

I think if not this year, then next year will be his last.

One game, one curtain call for Mark Teixeira.

Teixeira hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs in his Atlanta debut Wednesday night, leading the Braves to a 12-3 victory over the Houston Astros. Teixeira, acquired from Texas in Tuesday's seven-player trade, drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning to drive in a run in his first plate appearance.

After Houston reliever Matt Albers walked Edgar Renteria and Chipper Jones in the sixth inning, Teixeira hit a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left-center for his first homer with the Braves and his 14th overall. Teixeira was greeted with high-fives from Jones and Renteria and slaps on his helmet in the dugout, but the fans were not satisfied until he bounced back up the dugout steps and lifted his helmet high in response to the cheers.

"I've had a few curtain calls in my career," Teixeira said. "The fans tell you. After the at-bat, if they're still cheering, they're still yelling, you know they want you to do it. It was fun going out there."

Braves manager Bobby Cox said he enjoyed watching the successful debut. "The home run looked real good -- opposite-field line drive," Cox said. "He looked good at first, too."

Teixeira said he was aware he was being closely watched in his first game with the Braves.

Besides that meaningless home run with the game out of hand, he also struck out twice.

I'm interested to see how this trade pans out. Boy did the Braves give up a TON at the trading deadline. If they don't get a World Series out of this, was it worth it to literally "sell the farm"?

Escobar wins game for Braves:
The Braves will be going to New York for their big series starting Tuesday against the Mets with a little momentum.

Yunel Escobar had the game-winning hit in the 10th inning as Atlanta beat the Colorado Rockies, 6-5, on Sunday in the deciding game of their weekend series at Turner Field.

Jeff Francoeur doubled with one out and Matt Diaz was walked intentionally. Taylor Buchholz got ahead of Escobar, 0-2, but the rookie shortstop singled sharply to left field to drive in the winning run.

Since Teixeira's arrival in ATL, he has a .641 SLG, 2 2b, 4 dings and 11 RBI in 9 games ( through yesterday ).

Not to shabby so far.

Ladies and gentlemen, that's a bullpen. Wonder when the next time those Oriole fans will be sitting around TAP, shoe and company?

BTW, props to Wes Littleton of the Rangers for earning a save in this 30-3 debacle.

There is a provision in granting a save in cases when a relief pitcher pitches the last 3 innings (at least and is not in line for the W) of a game regardless of the score differential.

Are we to see the opposite happen? The Rangers take a 3-0 lead and the O's come right back with 3 of their own. With 2 on and 1 out.

Texas took the 2nd half of today's doubleheader 9-7, scoring 39 runs in one day.

.523 win% (56-51) and 3.5 games back before Tex.

.500 win% (10-10) and 6 games back after Tex.

Yup....paying off real nicely

Even though the Braves would've probably been 8 games back without Teixeira...

Yet another proof that very few midseason additions are worth the value you give up...

It's once in a blue moon that you can acquire RJ ca. 1998

A half year of Randy circa 1998 and a playoff appearance, vs. several years of in their prime Freddy Garcia and Carlos Guillen under cheap control. It's still a close call even when it works.
