Mike Tulumello of the East Valley Tribune today wrote:
The Tucson Sidewinders can blame Tropical Storm Ernesto for losing Gonzalez for the Triple-A Pacific Coast League playoffs.

Gonzalez was promoted to pitch Wednesday in Florida because Friday’s rainout in Washington (which forced a doubleheader on Saturday) created a pitching vacancy on Wednesday.

And now that he’s up with the D-Backs, he’s going to stay to be a long reliever, Melvin said.

“It’s nice to have a guy who can give you multiple innings in the bullpen,” Melvin said.

“It’s nice to know a guy can give you 75 or 80 or 90 pitches if he has to,” said Melvin, who judges Gonzalez to have pitched “pretty consistently” for the D-Backs.

Hmm, I don't think I like this. Enrique should be shut down and Edgar should pitch in his place. They should let Enrique pitch one more start and then have Edgar take his spot.

Enrique does not even need one more start this season.

Edgar should get the rest of the starts for the following two reasons:

1.) To get one last good look at him before deciding what to do with him for next year

2.) Because he might string together a few good starts and up his trade value if they decided they don't want to keep him

There is absolutely ZERO upside for keeping Enrique in the rotation and not putting Edgar in his place.

I wonder whose call it was to send Edgar to the bullpen.

I agree about putting Enrique down before his arm falls off, but if Edgar is in the BP it'll not only save a few BP arms some ware but give us a wider view of Edgar through more appearances.

I don't see Edgar as a SP candidate for us next year and don't believe his trade value is all that high right now. Might as well see if he'd fill a pen role.

That's what I was wondering as well. It's just not logical.

I don't know how often we would see him. How much more than once every 5 days is he likely to pitch in "long relief".....see Cruz, Juan.

I personally think that Edgar SHOULD be a SP candidate for us next year. Or rather, I think that he should get 4 more starts in a row, to allow the team to properly evaluate whether or not he CAN be a starting pitcher candidate.

I thought his stuff looked pretty damn good yesterday, and you saw the numbers I posted in the game thread. He has had two straight very good years in Tucson, but prior to yesterday, he had all of about 19 innings pitched in the majors in the last two years. (I don't count ANYTHING that happened to him in 2004 before he even turned 21)

Edgar Gonzalez is one good pitching coach, and one good game calling catcher away from being a pretty decent major league starter, IMHO

I only figured Enrique should get another start because then you could fit in Edgar without starting anyone on short rest.

I absolutely think that he should be an SP candidate for next year. If for no other reason than it would be cool to have two E. Gonzalez's pitching back to back. He has good stuff. He won't be a top of the rotation guy but he could be something.

We definitely need to shut Enrique down. Let him get that arm fresh over the winter, and build up to being durable enough for a full season. He should have a future with the team for at least the next three years.

Edgar should be given the rest of the season to start for the reasons that Shoe pointed out. And if there is no decent way to improve the rotation for next year, why not put Edgar out there as our #4 or 5 starter for the full year to see how he does? He wouldn't be worse than anybody else in that spot in the rotation, and it'd be hella cheap for us. Save that $5M or so to put towards an area of need for '08.

Lindsey Frazier / MLB.com tonight wrote:
While he didn't throw a no-no, Gonzalez (1-3) had a solid outing in Wednesday's spot start and was the tough-luck loser, as he allowed two runs on five hits over six innings.

Melvin said that Gonzalez pitched well enough to deserve another start, but whether that comes to fruition depends on the circumstances in the final month of the season.

"We'll see how it goes here," Melvin said. "He certainly pitched well enough to warrant another [start]. Whether or not we have that, there's some other variable obviously in place."

The Gonzalez of late is a far cry from the Gonzalez who went 0-9 in 2004 and gave up four earned runs and two walks his only appearance last season, which lasted all of one-third of an inning.
