D-backs @ Padres Game 110
My first Game Day thread on a radio only day. Let's go for the sweep!! Really I picked a horrible game to pick for my first one.

Yusmeiro Petit- 2-2, 3.44, Jake Peavy 10-5, 2.41

We just have to work the counts, drive up Peavy's pitch total, and get him out of the game. The Padre bullpen has been taking some beatings recently, so I'm optimistic about the game if Petit can continue to pitch well.

*Coincidently, we need to have the same game plan against Penny on Sunday - drive up his pitch count.

Man I don't even want to think about that Penny game. In 3 games vs us this year he is 2-0 with an 0.86 era. He's only given up 12 hits and 2 Runs total against us. To go along with the Dodgers winning every time. It's the closest thing I know to an automatic loss. This year the guy kills us.

However this game from last September 23rd I wouldn't mind seeing.
Sep. 23 ARI L 9-3 5.0 9H 5R 4ER 1BB 1HR

Peavy OTOH we can beat. Last year he was 1-2 with a 5.71 ERA against us.

I love these games.

On paper - this is the game SD has to win. Perfect trap to set.

Upton has been called up, but I don't know if he will play in SD today. His first game could be today, or Friday in LA.

We'll have to wait and see

Especially since SD has such a light hitting offense. Peavy is number 2 in era at 2.44 behing his teammate Young. Yet is 10-5, to me that's crazy. To go along with a 1.09 WHIP, he's second in that catergory too also behind Young. If the Padres ever figured out how to consistently score runs they'd be scary. Until then even when their ace is on the hill they can be beat.

If I was objectively looking at this race I'd say the Dodgers really have the best shot at winning the division. They are the most well rounded. Now of course I'm not so I fully expect us to hold on to the division lead.

So I'm guessing Quentin was placed on the DL??

Don't know if they've made that decision yet. I believe they had already decided to call him up by Friday, before Q got hurt last night.

That being the case, they might have planned to send Q back down, or DFA Davanon. Hard to tell which.

Now that Q is hurt, if he is sent down to minors and then put on ML DL, he can't draw major league salary. Possible Annibel Sanchez situation? Probably not, I don't think they would treat him that crappily.

Oh ok I thought maybe he was officially called up now. I wouldn't be surprised to see him by Friday. I doubt we see him today though in any event. I'd be for DFA Davanon but will the club be willing to right now? You know he's a good defender who provides good plate appearances Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I really don't get the lengths teams go to let certain players continue to make outs, and in general be counter-productive.

For my lack of knowledge of the intricate roster moves in baseball. A team can send an injured player down and then not pay him his Major league salary??

Well, I think in Quentin's case, the organization actually deserves credit for being as patient as they have been. It's a tough thing to do, but with young players, sometimes you just have to suck it up and let them develop.

That said, in Q's case, it was just hard to see any progress at all.

Not in this situation - it was clear here that he got hurt on the field in the majors... sanchez time of injury was less certain...

Q's situation is about as clear as it gets...

The only thing there, is it seems like he was being demoted before the team knew of his injury. Whereas in Q's case, could they really get away with sending him down after learning of the injury, and then putting him on the DL? Q's situation almost seems like in basketball how you can't release an injured player. Or so I believe.

In my first post in case I didn't make it clear I was referring to Davanon more so than Quentin. Although after looking up some of his numbers Davanon does have a decent OBP. .352 career and .371 for us last year. However he really scares me in the outfield. As well as his playing time could be given to Salazar/Upton, both younger players and I have to believe both better defenders. Well we already know Salazar is. To go along with actual upside.

My guess is that Q will go on the DL.

I seriously doubt they'll DFA DaVanon at this point.

Yeah more than likely he'll be around for the rest of the season especially with September call-ups right around the corner.

I dont really see the point of DFAing davanon at this point. It isnt like there is a huge roster crunch - or lack of spots. In a month, the roster will expand. i would make do with davanon until then. Q, salazar, and upton all have options, so i would mix and match until then depending on Qs status as well.

Should this team make the playoffs, then i would consider it...

Davanon's bat looks awfully slow. I believe Salazar would be an upgrade over Davanon in every possible way for the remainder of the season.

And JD's his arm is mush, too.
