 |
|
The San Diego Padres fired Merv Rettenmund as their hitting coach Tuesday and hired Wally Joyner to replace him.
This is the second straight season the Padres changed hitting coaches in midseason. They fired Dave Magadan on June 15, 2006, and replaced him with the popular Rettenmund. The Padres have one of the weakest offenses in the NL.
Rettenmund also was the Padres' hitting coach from 1991-1999.
Joyner served as the Padres' minor league hitting instructor in 2003 and as a special instructor during spring training from 2004-2007. He was a special assistant to general manager Kevin Towers in 2002.

That's 3 out of 5 in the NL West. How worried do you have to be if you're the hitting coach for Colorado or SF? |

Only the NL West contenders are firing their hitting coach... so the Gnats hitting coach is home free.

It's easier to fire your hitting coach than to reconfigure your ballpark.

Reconfiguration would have helped in SD, but making Chase any more of a hitter's park would have eliminated any chance of getting pitchers to sign in AZ.

With Colorado hitting the way they do, I'd say he's safe.
Doesn't matter who currently has the job in SF, as they all listen to Bonds.
