You are not gonna believe whose bats he was using...not for the superstitous or faint of heart

Bat man
Rookie outfielder Carlos Quentin has been all smiles the past couple of days. A large shipment of specialty bats finally arrived for him from the manufacturer. He's been inspecting the lot, taping them up and testing them out.
"Man, I'm happy," he said. "I've been waiting for these for a long time."
Whose bats had he been using while stringing together a series of quality at-bats?
"A Quinton McCracken model and a Russ Ortiz," he said, referring to the former Diamondbacks outfielder and pitcher. "I did pretty well with the Ortiz one, actually."

Hmm, I always thought players got to take their bats with them when they left a team.
Seriously, I know why Q prefers a shorter bats, but teams are pitching him away more and more. He's a strong kid. As he learns opposing pitchers better, he needs to add some inches to his wood. |

Betcha he used the Ortiz bat for all the power hits... that, after all, would be the Ortiz touch!

From the same article:

Shifting alignments
The Diamondbacks have enjoyed a lot of success this season when implementing an exaggerated infield defensive shift, positioning themselves to cover certain opposing hitter's tendencies.
It happened more than a few times during this series, and it really only cost them once.
"It may be different off certain pitchers, but if you get enough at-bats off of your guys, you have a better idea where to play guys," manager Bob Melvin said. " . . . When you do things drastically, sometimes you set yourself up to get burned a little bit. But you don't want to play for a pitcher's mistake. You want to play for them making their pitch." |
Interesting, considering most here (me included) have been fuming over some of the infield alignments. I wonder how much of Hudson's misplayed balls have been because he was assigned out of position.

More than a few, to be sure.
I'm not opposed to more aggressive infield alignment, but that is contingent on having pitchers who can execute a gameplan.

That is really funny. Are they light bats? He seems to have tons of bat speed when he really goes for it. |

He's been using a 32/33 (or is it a 33/32)? Basically it's no longer than 33 inches and weight no more than 33 ozs. I wonder if McCracken really had a bat that small considering he would choke up a lot on it ala Tony Womack style.

It's not the size of your bat - it's how you use it!
(I can't believe I just said that... )

I can't believe several hours went by and nobody caught this. I've lost all faith in the lack of maturity on this board.

Actually, it seriously wasn't a joke. I didn't even realize what I wrote.

What I don't understand is why it took so long to get him his own bats. He's been the starting RF since Green was sent packing--shouldn't he have been able to order his bats then, if not when he was first called up? And wouldn't players place orders during the offseason so that they have a supply of bats to start the year with? Why would it take so long? Hell, he could've gone to a local woodworker and had some hand-made to his own specs in a couple of days.

This is from last season.
BUT, Q needs to reconsider the whole short bat thing. He is missing pitches on the outside corners because his bat doesn't reach it. He's got a powerful swing. Give up a little bat speed for covering the whole plate. |
