 |
|
I think lost in the exuberance of Justin Upon, is the troubled state of our starting rotation. After Petit's poor start today, there are major questions about 3/5's of our rotation: Livan, Owings, and Petit.
Davis has pitched well of late, but it's still difficult to imagine him as an impact pitcher or even a solid #2 starter. In fact, the only starter that gives me a good feeling when he takes the mound is Webb.
Given our weak starting rotation, do we have a realistic shot of competing for the rest of the season and making the playoffs? |

Yes, simply because there are injury and depth issues on the Dodgers and Padres too. |

I'd extend that concern to the bullpen, too.
Aside from Webb, there isn't one pitcher that I'd bank on for the next two months. |

I would say that the starting rotation is a cause for concern. Brandon Webb is the only reliable pitcher on the staff at this time. Davis and Levon are on and off. the others, at least lately, are mostly off. The thing is , however, that there's not much that can be done about. The strong Arizona bullpen is some help. |

I'm concerned all the way through 08 as well. I don't think we'll have the resources to patch enough SP spots and I'm not overly confident RJ will be back more than 1/3 of a season. |

Had Johnson been made to follow the rehab plan, wouldn't he be making his appearance right about now? And be getting into the form we saw right in time for the September playoff push? |

They are short at least one starter this year. Webb is the only realiable starter. As for next year, they will still be down on maybe two starters. They need to make some tough decisions. They will need to trade quality to get quality. Some of the prospects & maybe one or two with major league experience should get us a good starter. I would keep Young & Upton. Trade maybe Jackson, Tracy, or Quinton. One of them not all. |

Someone feel like leaking a Clemens to the D-backs rumor? Give the NY rags something to write about for the next month. |

Webb is definitely an elite pitcher, I also think Davis is very serviceable.
Other than those two, I have question marks in all.
We have to deal one of our young players to acquire another pitcher for next season and beyond. Upton, Young, and Drew's keeper, but everyone else has to be someone looked at to be possible trade bait to acquire a pitcher this off season.
I hope that our guys can hold up until the post season.

Pretty cool. Livan didn't look to bad tonight. I wish he would walk less, but I know why he's doing it.
