Giving that tired young fellah, Conor, a rest?
And poor tired Stephen Drew...
And poor tired Carlos Quentin...
And that poor, soon-to-be-tired Chris Young...

Tony Clark is a waste of roster space. Everyone here knows that. Of course, I knew that the moment he got the extension last summer. I couldn't believe what I was seeing: Tony Clark was having a career year, there were teams knocking on the Dbacks door offering young talent for him at the trade deadline, and the morons running the team gave him a two year extension. Talk about idiocy.
The Dbacks should just release him in the offseason, eat the million, and bring up Chris Carter in his place. |

You can't pin all of that record on Clark. The bigger problem has been a rotten bullpen. Is it Clark's fault that the DBacks couldn't hold a lead in either game of today's doubleheader? No. Could he have helped if he'd actually HIT the ball? Yes. I'm not defending Clark, but let's put the blame where it belongs--mostly on the bullpen.

Anyone have the record of the high school basketball team Tony coaches the last couple years? I suspect they're very bad . . . unless they're on Tony's '05 "nutrition" program. |

i don't think tony did anything sketchy last season. maybe it's the last little shred of love i have for him from his detroit days, but i just can't believe he'd do that. and steroids aren't something that you can take and be better the next day -- it's a long, slow process.
he had a fluke year. he cashed in on it. i don't blame him at all. the FO is full of retards, though, for buying into a clear outlier of a year.

No, I don't even blame Tony that much. I mean, if I dropkick a two-week-old baby into a canal and it drowns, I'm responsible. It's not the baby's fault it can't swim. It is clear that Tony Clark is an infectious disease on the team. If his PT is an attempt to improve their draft position for next season, it makes some sense, I suppose. Really, I'm just astounded at how bad he is more than anything, and how a team can run him out there in a non-ironic fashion.

It's one helluva coincidence for a guy basically on his last chance, you must admit.

did his physique change significantly? he still looked about the same as he did for the last several seasons before -- and he didn't really show anything as stellar then. i really just think it was luck. he didn't look any different.
also, he came from a few pitchers parks, where he battled cold weather and old injuries, and then he had a relatively injury-free season in a warm climate in a hitter's park. that plus luck equals his season, IMO.

Robert, today sucked and Tony’s play has sucked all year, but the post above goes to the level of shawngreenhater.com
Tony’s presence is not an “infectious disease” and there is a place on this team where he can make a positive input; it’s just not with a bat or glove in his hand anymore and Melvin is at fault for continuing to run Clark out there in place of Jackson.
Josh, why not pay Tony to be a $1M coach instead of keeping him on the bench as a .194 hitting 1st baseman?

Oh, come on: disease |di?z?z| noun a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, esp. one that produces specific signs or symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury : bacterial meningitis is a rare disease | a possible cause of heart disease. • figurative a particular quality, habit, or disposition regarded as adversely affecting a person or group of people : departmental administration has often led to the dread disease of departmentalitis.

Even though Clark isn't hitting any more, can he teach others to hit?
If there's even a chance he can, then either give him Aldrete's job, and re-assign Aldrete to be the hitting coach of the Sidewinders; or send TC to be the hitting coach of the Sidewinders.
Or, if he's better equipped to instruct on fielding, let him work with CoJack; or send him to Tucson to teach there.
At this point, these would appear to be a better ROI than having Clark in the lineup...

The problem isn't Tony Clark and his poor play, or Counsell and his limited contributions, etc., The problem is Melvin. He is a piss-poor manager and that's all there is to it. He doesn't appear to demand enouth in the way of excellence, caters to his PVs, has little conception on how to use his pitching properly by nearly ALWAYS waiting far too long to change pitchers in clutch situations......I could go on and on.
Byrnes needs to face up to the fact that he's made a huge mistake by extending Biff's contract, can his butt, and get someone on the field who DOES have a decent grasp of these things.
Biff may be a swell guy, helps promote clubhouse chemistry, but he is a black hole on the playing field.

Clark is a nice player. He's having a bad year mostly because of injuires.
But he's not a good fit for a young team in re-building mode like the D-Backs.
He's a perfect spare part for a team that is seriously in contention with a good chance of going deep into the playoffs. Or a DH on an AL team.
Levski is 100% correct that he should have been traded last year when he had value. Now all we can get for him are some paper clips and rubber bands.
He could have value again, but the only way that would happen is playing him so he can put up some numbers. But it's already too late, plus it means taking Jackson or others out of the lineup. |

So it's obvious that the team is, in fact, not going to take advantage of September. |

It's not a wise move, but it was predictable.

Well said charlie. I'm still pissed that our FO gave him an extension in the middle of the season. Especially after the shitty June we had. They should have waited until the offseason to do anything.

But I see you didn't wait to offer your updated "A" emblem with the new team colors. Nice work, by the way!

In Sunday's Week Ahead column, I analyzed the objectives of AL teams as they plow through September, and there were many variations. Some teams were playing for next year, and some teams were playing for that day.
The NL is much tighter, as you'll see in my team-by-team September objectives:
Arizona. Objective: Previewing 2007. And I like what I see. Although Luis Gonzalez likely will be gone, this team will have a solid young nucleus, and we're already seeing the fruit (Carlos Quentin, Stephen Drew, Edgar Gonzalez).
(FANTASY) FORTUNES FALLING
Stephen Drew, SS, D-backs. Since being called up July 15, Drew has been bothered by a sore hand (ongoing), a fever, hamstring soreness and a groin tweak. I wouldn't be so bothered if he weren't a Drew. |
If Arizona's objective in September is previewing 2007, why are they still playing vets that won't be part of that 2007 team, rather than playing the youngsters that will?

Well, ya know... It's tough making out the lineup every day and satisfying the egos. We just want to keep an even keel the rest of the season... win some games. We're not outta the race, ya know. We haven't had that big win streak yet, and we're due. Counse and Gonzo have been there before.
