I don't even know who the pitching matchups are (as if that matters), but while taking my regular morning hike at the Dreamy Draw I ran into a large Diamondback rattlesnake. I'm taking this as an omen.

* What I really hope the snake means is that the REAL future Dbacks begin getting regular playing time. All else is irrelevant at this point.

would you describe the snake as fat and slovenly, or young and eager to make its mark?

It looks like we may have a couple of rain outs in our future.

# Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely. Low 78F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 80%. Rainfall may reach one inch.
# Tomorrow: Showers and a few thunderstorms likely. High 86F. Winds S at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 60%. Rainfall near a quarter of an inch.
# Tomorrow night: Scattered thunderstorms during the evening, then partly cloudy overnight. Low 78F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60%."

Normal weather for Miami in the late summer. It will probably clear up eventually every day. I bet the games all get played.

I'm usually not a fan of building new ballparks when the old ones work well enough, mostly because the taxpayers are expected to pay for them while team owners get rich(er) on the profits. But that stadium in Miami is crap for baseball, and they need a retractable roof. Wake up, Florida!

What's that we were saying about playing the kids, almost all are playing. Drew (lefty) is sitting.

1. C Young, CF .321
2. O Hudson, 2B .289
3. C Jackson, 1B .278
4. E Byrnes, LF .279
5. C Quentin, RF .237
6. D Easley, SS .216
7. A Green, 3B .208
8. C Snyder, C .292
9. C Vargas, P .095

/Gonzo's press conference scheduled right after the game.

A nice final send off with dignity.

We wouldn't want Drew's over .300 average against lefties in the lineup when we can have the .218 hitting Easely playing now, would we? Melvin is a moron.

Even though a lefty/lefty combo usually favors the pitcher, it pays to look beyond that generalization in this case. Stephen Drew in 165 plate appearances is batting .355/.394/.613 against LHP's and .304/.338/.464 against RHP's.

Easley OTOH, is hitting .233/.330/.411 against LHP's (today's situation w/Willis) and .195/.271/.364 against RHP's.

Yes, there is a small sample size issue in Drew's case, especially against LHP's, but my point is that it pays for a manager to look beyond just L vs. L and R vs. R when making these decisions. Is Drew tired or injured?

On the bright side, we do have Byrnes, Young, and Quentin starting in the OF.

Sandra thinks that this losing streak really stinks and that we should buck the trend.

Well, Vargas is fighting for a job, hopefully he pitches like it.

I know this sounds pessimistic but how big a lead will we build up only to blow today?

It'd better be or else it appears, BoMel's main goal as manager is to break rookies spirit.

Last four blown leads were 6-1 (lost 6-7), 3-1 (lost 3-4), 3-1 (lost 3-5), and 5-0 (lost 5-8 ), so it appears that at the very least we'll need a 7 run cushion.

If so, then why play him every other day? Just say his hand is hurting and you are shutting him down until he feels better. The hand sounds totally like an excuse to me...

I don't have the inside poop on the injury issues. It was just a possibility and sometimes you take these things day to day instead of shutting a guy down.

Drew has only played 1 game in the last 4, I'd say he's hurt or else he'd be in this lineup.
