I was reading an article today that reference a Buster Olney article that it would be logical for the DBacks to try to acquire Dye from the White Sox.

What am I not seeing in his stats that makes him so desirable? He's hit 11HR but is batting only .225 with an OPS of .713. This is better than Q but not so much that I'd trade prospects for only 3 months of his service.

Dye had a career year last year, hitting .315/.385/.622 with 44 HR and 120 RBI

He is only making 6 million this year, so it only costs 3 million to pay him for half a season.

He may be 33, but I am fairly confident that he won't end the season with a low 700's OPS. He has never had a full season under 100 OPS+, and as long as he is healthy, there is no reason not to expect a rebound in the second half. Not to last year's career highs of course. But an OPS somewhere between .800-.850 is certainly a pretty good projection for his second half.

So if the cost in minor league talent were nice and low, I could see possibly taking a chance on him in RF and sending Q back to Tucson to work on things and come back and try again in 2008.

The problem is there is little chance the price would be low. There will be other teams looking to add him as well, and the price will get steep.

At the very least your costs are as follows:

1.) Approx 3.0 Million
2.) Giving up on Q's season
3.) At least one of our top prospects, say somebody ranked between 6-12 in the organization. No way Chicago does it for less than that.

Probably not worth it.

I have not factored in defense. How is his defense these days? Anyone know?

Dye's always been a good defender.

Why do you need Dye anyhow? If you're gonna send Q down, might as well see what Hairston can do...

Well....last years Dye would be pretty kick ass to help make a run here.

But of course we can't have that.

One thing I was thinking about while driving home from my kids pitching lesson today.

IF the D Backs weren't trying to make the playoffs this year....serious about wanting to make the playoffs, they don't trade for RJ.

So I don't think we can rule out a "trade for a big bat" entirely.

I don't disagree with you about Hairston. I would much rather see him be told...."OK Scotty....here you go....8 weeks to make it or break it".
But they are just not going to do that.

If they ARE going to make a trade, Dye might be a good buy low candidate. Thats if they can buy low....which I've already expressed my doubts about.

DaVannon's fine too, but most likely its going to take him a month to find out what he's got in the tank. the chances of him coming back and hitting Brad Penny off the dl, after being out for a year...well protrade.com odds wouldn't be pretty....

If Reynolds is an option at second, what about Luke Scott for Alberto?

I was going to stick in lf, for more depth. No Cargo/Upton yet for this year. Not going to comment on the other options.
