Well...ill give it a shot.
Vargas faces Padres in series finale
San Diego (67-65) at Arizona (64-6, 3:40 p.m. PT
The Diamondbacks and Padres face off on in the rubber match and series finale on Wednesday afternoon at Chase Field.
Arizona was dominant offensively in Monday's win, as nine batters had at least one hit. The same cannot be said for Tuesday's contest, as the D-Backs were held hitless through the first three innings and recorded only six hits on the night.
Claudio Vargas will toe the rubber for the D-Backs. Vargas has not lost since Aug. 1 and since then, has reeled off a pair of wins and two no-decisions.
When he allows the ball to get up in the zone, he gets in trouble, which accounts for the 24 home runs he has given up this season.
Rookie right-hander Mike Thompson takes the hill for the Padres. With the exception of his start on Friday against the Rockies, Thompson has been solid for San Diego, not giving up more than four runs in a start since June 3. Over that stretch, however, he has won only once.
In his big-league debut against the D-Backs on May 17, Thompson pitched well, giving up four runs -- three of which were earned -- over five innings for the victory. In his last start against the Snakes on Aug. 19 at PETCO Park, Thompson suffered the loss while giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Pitching matchup
ARI: Claudio Vargas (10-8, 5.14 ERA)
After three straight quality starts, Vargas struggled on Friday against the Dodgers. He was charged with six earned runs -- three of which by the long ball, including two off the bat of J.D. Drew -- over 4 1/3 innings and received the no-decision.
SD: Mike Thompson (3-5, 5.07 ERA)
Thompson had a rough outing on Friday against the Rockies as he surrendered hits to the first six batters he faced in a four-run first inning. He left after five innings and was charged with eight earned runs on 11 hits.
Player to watch
With a home run and a single, Orlando Hudson was just about the only Arizona player to find success at the plate Tuesday night.

Hopefully Vargas can make it out of the 1st inning. Figure he's due for a good start - even he isn't this bad this many consecutive times.
Talk about getting shut down last night. How can a 6'10" guy throw as softly as Young was throwing last night? That's some deceptive shit.

padre pitchers pitch sequence, knock guy off plate, go outer half. Drew would probably would of had some success last night, but Young has a very deceptive sinker, after knocking guys off the plate. Pretty simple formula.

One good move.
Two bad moves.
I doubt that anyone here needs an explanation...

Looking forward to the day that BoMel won't have the Gonzo and TC pieces to screw up the roster puzzle. |

Has there been one game in which we could actually say we were happy with the lineup melvin is putting out there?
Most of that is due to Gonzo playing every single day for the last 2 months... but still... |

Probably not.
Speaking for myself, I can say that I would much rather that the time remaining in this season be devoted to helping the players who will make a positive contribution to the Diamondbacks in future years get some experience now.
It may strike some fans as cold, but, from a "business-like" point of view -- that of winning ballgames, en route to winning it all -- I'd say to Gonzo, "Gee, thanks for 2001 and all, but what have you done this season?"
(For those who will bring up the number of doubles he's hit, I'll ask again: how many of those would have been home runs in previous seasons?)
The last thing we need right now is "legacy" players on the field on a regular basis...

Listining to melvin on mlb radio....
Sounding really defeated - Quote:
"

well, with couns not in there, and byrnes in the cleanup spot, we thought we might give young a shot" |
Well, it appears that counsell is still the starting SS, at least in Bomels mind, and that there wasnt even a thought of taking gonzo out... Young in LO was a last resort in Bomels mind as well...

It's as bad as when Brenley was coaching. He couldn't decide on a line-up either.

Here we go again...
Runner on second and nobody out.
One out.
Two outs.
Three outs, and the runner is still on second...
San Diego leads after 1, 1-0.
SSDD...

I'm watching on a cheap computer monitor that refreshes every 60 seconds. How sick is that?

That is pathetic. Runner on 2nd with no outs and surprise surprise he gets stranded there. Even worse when you consider that every batter Thompson faced could have easily drawn out a walk with his piss poor location in that inning. |
