Too often times baseball players are painted as selfish, overpaid bungholes. I wanted to point out how one player, Jon Adkins, made my day.

I am a Diamondbacks fan, but I have to give props to the Padres Jon Adkins. My 4 year old and I went to the Wednesday afternoon game and at the end Adkins pitched a ball up to myself from the bullpen. We didn't ask, he offered and we gladly accepted. We came down from Section 316 to check out the lower bowl and worked our way over to look down into the bullpen and watch Trevor Hoffman warm up.

A wonderful time at the ballpark that I will never forget. I am doing my part to raise a Diamondback fan and to support the fan base of our beloved D Backs.

PS Gonzo needs to retire.

Hey Dan, thanks for your post!

That's a warm fuzzies story all over -- for you, and your daughter (and I hope it was a thrill she'll never forget, and cement a love for baseball for her). And it's great to hear of the thoughtfulness of Jon Adkins -- it says a lot about his own love of the game, and sharing it with y'all -- even in "enemy territory."

There is so much about baseball that is wonderful and heartwarming...

Gonzo: Never have been so many words written about a .275 15 homer player.

...But I've been tracing
Trying to remember
Some of the things we used to care about

...I don't want it all back
I don't mind where I'm at
I've been trying to stand tall
But I've been placing so much of my mind's eye
Just trying to see over these walls...

chorus

Most of the time when it fades away
I don't really mind reshaping clay

I wasn't always such a sucker
It's the sentimental me
Maybe I'm blowing my cover
But what I want to see
Is the way things used to be
Between you and me
The way things used to be
