The Uggla move, explained

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=71449

Quote:
The D-Backs wanted to retain Uggla after he hit .297 with 21 home runs at Tennessee and showed well in the Arizona Fall League, but they reluctantly removed him from the 40-man roster last winter when they believed they had completed a trade with the Mets that necessitated clearing two roster spots, The deal fell through, however, and the D-Backs were unable to pull Uggla back.

My guess is the trade that failed was AZ's attempt to trade Javy to the Mets.

I'm not sure if I totally believe that. Don't teams have a certain time period where they are allowed to make the roster decisions? They shouldn't have done anything until the trade went through. Unless, of course, there was a deadline passing that they needed the rosters set by.

If its true, I feel a lot better about it. If not, it was Byrnes' first big fuckup.

He's had like a .770 OPS since the ASB so maybe.

Wasn't Daigle on the 40-man back then?

Yeah, explanation fail.

This is total revisionist history bs. You don't have to clear roster spots for players you haven't even acquired yet. Uggla may or may not be a player with long term value, but that was one weak-ass explanation for what appears to be a gaffe by the Dback braintrust.

When there are so many you have to have something to tell the fans...

I'm not convinced that losing Uggla was a huge brainfart on the Dbacks FO part. He won't come back to haunt them, that's for sure....
