Thumbs up or down?
If we get a good deal on him I think it would make sense. I wouldn't go long term with him, maybe 2yrs max, but he could fill in the rear of the rotation pretty well.
If we go with the assumption we have to at least look better next year than this year, to maintain a fan base, if we are really going for 2008-9, then I think keeping Batista makes sense. |

Keeper. He can anchor the back of the rotation and then, when a younger, better option comes up, he's versatile enough to go to the pen. Like you said, no more than a couple years.

Agreed, if the price is right.
He's clearly not the pitcher for the second spot in the rotation; but as a #3 or #4, he would appear to be of some value.

I'll agree. If the price is right, Batista is an excellent swingman back of the rotation starter/reliever.

That'll be the tough spot as his easy-stats <ERA/ W/L> look decent enough to warrant some $$ in this market. |

I saw an interview where he was asked if he wants to stay and he never answered the question. Kinda jumped around it and seemed ready to test the FA market. It seemed to me he would rather be elsewhere. But who knows, money talks and bull-shiat walks.

Yes, but he knows there's different management now. At 5M/yr, Batista is a good value. And I doubt he'll get more than that on the FA market.

i'm CERTAIN he'll get more than 5M/yr. certain. i mean, kris motherfucking benson, the very definition of mediocrity, gets more than that. even if his periphs are headed south, pitching is thin and overpriced right now. he'll try the FA market, and he'll get a better offer than that. guaranteed.

Miggy is going to be 36 next year. That will hold his price down. |

Yes, but Kris Motherfucking Benson has had a lot of hype surrounding him in recent years, hype which he hasn't lived up to. But stupid teams will pay for hype--just like JB said about paying for past performance for FA pitchers. Miggy will get paid strictly based on his numbers, his age, and his health. And I don't see that being more than 5M next year.

Why pay $5M when you can pay $400,000 for that production? Pass. |

I'd much rather the team take a chance on somebody than give several million to Batista. |
