Sinking Red Sox shopping Wells for possible trade
By Buster Olney
ESPN The Magazine

The Boston Red Sox are actively shopping veteran pitcher David Wells to determine what they could get if they decide to trade the lefty in the next 48 hours.

Wells, 43, cleared waivers on Aug. 3, at a time when he was just starting to come back from a serious knee problem; on July 31, he allowed 8 runs in 4 2/3 innings. Because he cleared waivers, he can be traded to any team without restriction, and Wells has pitched much better of late. He has 2.65 ERA in the month of August, walking 5 and striking out 20 in 34 innings.

The notion that the Red Sox might consider trading Wells would've seem ludicrous two weeks ago, but Boston is in freefall and has dropped 6 games behind the Twins in the wild-card race, and 7 games behind the Yankees in the AL East. Wells has talked about retiring at the end of this season, so if the Red Sox keep Wells through the month of September and don't make the playoffs, they would effectively lose him for nothing.

And he has high value right now, at a time when the likes of Shawn Chacon and Ramon Ortiz are the only pitchers who typically get through waivers. Wells' exceptional postseason history has to intrigue teams: In 16 postseason series, he has a 10-4 record, with a 3.15 ERA. In order to be eligible for post-season play with another team, Wells would have to be traded by Aug. 31.

The Red Sox may decide to keep Wells, in the end. But their recent conversations with other teams have been aimed at laying the groundwork for a possible deal if they decide to move the left-hander.

Among the contending teams that make sense as possible suitors for Wells would include the Mets, the Twins, the Diamondbacks, the Padres, the Dodgers, the Phillies, the Cardinals, Oakland and the Cincinnati Reds.

hmm...

I'm thinking that this isn't going to happen, and for the better.

I assume our history with tubbo can eliminate us as likely suitors. Hopefully the Dodgers trade away to get him. I'd love to see them lose a decent prospect or two for him only to watch him go on the DL a week later as San Diego overtakes them for the NL title.

The Phillies are the only franchise stupid enough to consider Wells seriously

Wow. I didn't think Olney was that stupid. Wells-to-AZ makes no sense at all, nor would it make sense for most of those other teams. The only team that might give it a go is St. Louis, but they wouldn't give much for him.

i don't get why boston would even trade him. they NEED pitching. so what if they lose him for nothing? their budget can absorb that. they NEED him now if they want even a chance. trading him concedes their season, and they're not in desperate need of budget relief.

no makey sense.

now buster olney is reporting that we did express some interest in him, but the padres and the cards are the frontrunners in the sweepstakes.

It looks like we might be in the clear, fellas.

Wouldn't be shocked if Cards put in for the one month rental. They are almost certain to shut Mulder down... To continue to run him out there for beatings would be insanity; to get Wells smacks of desperation.

It'll start on Gambo & Ash (Josh will be laughing like hell, thinking they are doing comedy)

I'd trade Gambo and Ash for David Wells. Throw in a pair of used socks.

Actually, the socks might be worth more than Gambo & Ash...

Looks like pads the front runners - for thier no2 prospect kottaras

2. GEORGE KOTTARAS, c Born: May 16, 1983 B-T: L-R Ht: 6-0 Wt: 190
Drafted: Connors State (Okla.) JC, D/F 2002 (20th round) Signed by: Lane Decker

Background: After signing in May 2003 as a draft-and-follow for early fourth-round money ($375,000), Kottaras played a full season of pro ball for the first time in 2005. He played just 78 games in 2004 because he was a backup on the Greek Olympic team, going 3-for-12 in Athens.

Strengths:
Kottaras profiles as an offense-oriented catcher. He displays natural hitting instincts and commands the strike zone. He generates easy line-drive power with a quiet setup and fluid swing, projecting to hit 15-20 home runs annually. He’s athletic behind the plate and has plus arm strength.

Weaknesses:
Kottaras has a tendency to get pull-happy, and needs to focus simply on centering the ball and letting his strength work for him naturally. His arm plays only average because of a slow glove-hand exchange and a long release. He’s a bit small for a catcher, leaving some to wonder if he can handle the rigors of a full season.

The Future:
Kottaras’ bat separates him from the rest of San Diego’s catching prospects. He’ll begin 2006 back in Double-A and is on schedule to be the starter at the big league level by the end of 2007.

This is not a good trade for the Padres. They're only going to get a month out of the guy, and there's no way the Pads are going anywhere in the playoffs even if they get there. And giving up the guy who might have replaced Piazza in a couple of years for a one-month rental just doesn't seem particularly smart. Short-term thinking...

Edit: Forgot about Josh Bard. I guess they think they have enough depth at catcher. Still seems like too good of a prospect to give up for a broken-down rental.

Am I to understand that the guy they traded for Wells was the number two prospect in their entire organization? And Wells is a free agent at the end of the year? And 42 years old to boot?

Joe Jr. wouldn't have even made THIS trade!

Reeediculous deal for the Pads. Red Sox were asking for Wainwright or Chirs Duncan from the Cards, so they quickly backed out (besides, Wells had said that he'd retire if traded to them)
