JM Barten at Beyond the Box Score does a great breakdown of 3 young NL West firstbaseman, Gonzalez, Jackson, and Loney.

I think this is excellent analysis, objective, and balanced.

A must read for anyone interested in Conor Jackson....which would be just about all of us I guess.

Good read!

Quote:
If he does add some power, he could be a beast, posting very high OBP's as pitchers avoid grooving a pitch to him and he sits back and lets them give him a free pass. Edgar Martinez is what can happen when those factors converge

Think we could live with an "Edgar" in Arizona Cool

An Edgar that plays both sides! Er, I mean an Edgar that plays the field! Uh, an Edgar that plays offense and defense! What a steal that would be with Edgar's lifetime .418 and peak .479 OBP. Very Happy

heh... If the M's were in the NL, their Edgar WOULD have continued playing third (or would've switched to first) Wink

Maybe the numbers get there, but comparing anybody to basically the greatest DH - with the prettiest right-handed swing I've ever seen - is quite a stretch.

Aside from the comparison, though, looks like good things. As long as CJ can identify the breaking pitches that are strikes, rather than just laying off of all of them, sans hangers.

Did you read the linked article?

I think you are taking the Edgar Martinez "comparison" out of context. He is not "comparing" Edgar to Jackson.

Here is the portion he wrote:

Quote:
Jackson hasn't ever had that power spike and he doesn't have the plus defense, but he does have a long history of posting impressive walk and K/BB rates, which makes him a potential threat to post abnormally high BA and OBP figures even if he remains a high teens/low 20's per season home run threat. If he does add some power, he could be a beast, posting very high OBP's as pitchers avoid grooving a pitch to him and he sits back and lets them give him a free pass. Edgar Martinez is what can happen when those factors converge.

Basically I look at that as the most optimistic, wet dream potential upside.
There is a one in a hundred chance that actually happens.

Then again, check out Edgars Baseball Cube Page. Focus on the minor league numbers, especially the bb-k ratios and the lack of homers. Then look at his major league numbers from 89 through 94. Edgar Martinez did not become a beast until 1995, at age 32. Prior to that, he was just a pretty good hitter.

It's interesting to see how hitters evolve.

I hear ya, just making a point that Edgar was the man. And he was one fo the few righties that had a pretty swing.

I fully expect CJ to develop some real pop in the latter half of his career, although, the ball just seems to die off his bat now. No pop there yet, unless he really, really gets ahold of one.

One thing that makes me such a homer for CJ is he has a freakish batting eye. I think, with a few adjustments to his swing, he should start putting up serious power numbers.

He's not getting enough backspin. He'll learn how to do that eventually.

He's gotta refine that upper cut, and come down on the ball like A-Rod.

He just has to worry about hitting 330, if does that he'll hit 25 on mistake pitches alone. That being said Edgar was Mattingly from the right side.

How so? Not in form, but maybe in stats.

Mattingly was coiled, Edgar places weight on his back foot.

I asked the Magic 8 Ball http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~ssanty/images/8ball2.gif if CJ was at best an AL DH and was told..."Signs point to yes." Wink

Well, at least now we know the source of most of your baseball opinions. Thanks for clarifying that. Wink

Maybe it's time to clean and reboot the preconceived notions filter on your Magic 8-Ball?

Or maybe it's time to consult the Mystical Smoking Head of Bob?

I'm not convinced that Bob is as reliable as the Magic 8 Ball but I posed that question anyway and his response was "You may rely on it." Wink

I've read that's the same method Joe Jr. used to evaluate talent Wink

That might be a tad generous in regards to Joe Jr's abilities

Bob said the dbacks will most likely win the NL west, and the world series.

He also says yes in regards to the giants sucking.

O, ye of little faith! For yea, verily, did the Mystical Smoking Head of Bob begin his existence as, in fact, the Magic 8-Ball -- until Hasbro threatened to sue...

And that information comes straight from the mouth of Bob himself!
