Here is an excellent case study.
Last off season he signed a 1 year with no options. How much control do we have over him?
I'm thinking that he will have > 5 years of service time after this season.
So we have to sign him or offer arb at this point?
If he declines arb or we can't sign him then we get comp picks?
If we are negotiating with him for next or following years isn't he going to be interested in a NTC?
Let's hear your thoughts. |

As Matt said....we have been over this before, and it has been clarified.
The D backs control his rights for next season andhe is of course arbitration eligible.
They can:
A.) Negotiate a deal with him
B.) Submit to the arbitration process
C.) Trade him
D.) Non Tender him
If they don't bring Gonzo back, I am guessing there is a pretty good chance they keep Byrnes, but no idea to what kind of contract, (one year, multi-year, whatever). If they decide to bring Gonzo back, then my guess is they would look to trade Byrnes.
Chris Young will be the CF next year and Quentin will be the RF. Those two things you can take to the bank. The rest is up in the air. |

If gonzo and byrnes are going to be due roughly the same $ ($3.5-$4.0M), I would want byrnes back instead of gonzo.
Gonzo and byrnes are likely to have similar production next year. They are pretty close now, Gonzo having a slight edge in OPS, but gonzo is more likely to slow even further, as most 40 year olds do.
Byrnes would play a better LF, provide more speed, be able to play CF from time to time, and not whine about being taken down for davanon, should the matchups be better. Bynes, Young Q, would become one of the better defensive OFs around, going from one of the worst (Gonzo, Byrnes, Green)
Choice is clear in my book. |

The only thing in Gonzo's favor is that he would be the only true lefty in the OF. Next year's team will have a bunch of RHBs:
RH
Jackson
Snyder
Q
Young
Hairston
Byrnes??
LH
Tracy
Drew
Gonezo?
Montero?
SH
Hudson
DaVannon
Clark
Callaspo?
Which way does Barden bat? |

That is true... although it doesnt bother ME that much - davanon could fill one of those spots...
carlos gonzalez is that LHed OFer of the future.. |

Let's give Carlos a chance to master AA first. In 40 ABs he's hitting .411. Now before you get excited, realize that that is his OPS. |

I saw that as well...
I wasnt saying he was going to be Up next year, just that there wasnt a huge need to worry about the future...
CarGo is still a 20 Year old in AA, who just met his teammates, and has only 40ABs... |

So LF in '09 is covered. Who we putting out there 'til then?
And how much more would we be getting from Byrnes than from Hairston or Davanon? I don't think you can expect another 20 HR's out of him, but the avg/ops should be somewhat similar. It'd be nice if he learned to go the other way a little bit, though.

Byrnes
Davanon
Young
Quentin
Thats my 4. Should get pretty darn solid play for about 5-6M total.
If there is room to carry hairston, thats fine - I think he will be traded at some point in the offseason. But, maybe you are right, maybe he should be the LFer. I would hope that he could get some PT in sept to prove what he can do. (Like thats going to happen)
I do like how of the 4 guys above, they are all athletic enough to play CF. |

Still at least one if not two years away from being major league ready. And by major league ready, I mean a mid-season call-up. Many thought of Terrero as they have with Carlos Gonzalez. Too early to even think about him in the mix, imo.

And only two of them are stellar bats. I'd give John Kruks one testicle for consistent offense out of the OF. ManRam might be a shitty defender, but you know you're going to get consistency in over .300 hitting and 30 HRs.

As shoe has said before, the platoon splits on Byrnes/DaVannon are extreme. If Melvin had both of them healthy next year and used them according to their splits (with Byrnes getting a few ABs against RHBs to keep him fresh) they would be an awesome team in LF for a nice price. As a benefit, both can be used in all three OF spots.
I used to think that we should offer Gonzo a share of LF. As time goes on it seems more and more pointless. What helps the team more: one crotchety old LF, who can only play LF, that will give league average and call a press conference everytime he gets benched or two guys who can give better production, won't pout when benched, and who can play all three OF spots? |

So, you want to trade for manny? Edit: Let me clarify here - there are only a few guys really available that are the kind of guy you speak of in this offseason via FA. Carlos Lee, and Soriano. There is the next tier of guys like cameron, and such as well. Lee and soriano are going to command 10-12M a year? Thats money better spent somewhere else, as some other threads have discussed.
What is your plan for the 4 ofers?

Manny was just an example of the type of consistency we need. Kind of like Gonzo, '99-'02. Miguel Cabrera is one of the few young guys that is consistent.

So I'm driving along listening to Gambo & Ash do their baseball analysis, and Ash's grasp of baseball is awful! Ash's take on the DBacks outfield next year? He'd like to have both Gonzalez and Byrnes playing fulltime. He wants Byrnes as the fulltime CF until Upton is ready, with Young playing 4th OF or acting as trade bait.
Then some fan calls in to support Ash's thoughts saying that he doesn't understand all the hype about Young and that Young's just an unproven rookie.
Gambo and Ash both went on and on about what a good year Gonzo is having this season, and in their assessment the 3 stats that determine the success of a hitter are BA, RBI's, and HR's.
And this is the best in radio sports talk that Phoenix has to offer? |

Yep. The Phoenix area's sports media is horrible. Heck, most all the media is bad here. Except the TV hotties. They can stay. |

heh.... Sad, but it's the "best." It also helps explains how badly casual fans get misinformation.

It's amazing even that if they consider HR's a huge measuring stick that it would support Gonzo. |

Really it's amazing that they'd use RBI (63 and ranked 48th in the NL) or AVG (.280 and ranked 47th in NL)
Gonzo's value above and beyond completely avg has been his BB rate and his high number of 2B. Neither go into BA/HR/RBI (well maybe 2B into RBI, but obviously not much).

The only thing that surprised me was that they were talking about baseball. It seems all you get from them and the morning losers is football talk. |

I was listening to the tail end of Gambo and Ash's interview with Eric Byrnes today. Wow! That guy knows his stuff and is so eloquent. He was explaining the various points of his contract and being arb eligible. He said he'd take a long term deal for less money knowing that he has security, but it's all up to the club. He also mentioned how he loves playing here and wants to be apart of the team's future. Made specific comments about the quality of rookies saying he knows there are more and the team is only getting better because of them. He also said he would play anywhere next year--he just wants to be apart of the team. At first I thought they were interviewing a GM or some baseball analyst. Then he started talking about "I" stuff and I realized who it was.
Wow, I know what he has a future in when he retires. Grace should be long gone by then. |
