AZ: RHP Miguel Batista (10-5, 1.59 WHIP, .303 BAA, 4.85 K/9, 1.38 K/BB, 4.52 ERA)
In his last start on Sunday, Batista received a no-decision -- his 10th of the season. The veteran right-hander gave up a single run over seven innings of work against the Padres.
LA: RHP Derek Lowe (11-8, 1.26 WHIP, .256 BAA, 5.24 K/9, 2.24 K/BB, 3.84 ERA)
Lowe has won four of his last five starts and credits abandoning the cutter for helping him regain the feel of his sinker. Against the Giants on Sunday, he gave up two runs -- one earned -- over eight innings.
Player to watch
Center fielder Eric Byrnes is 8-for-12 lifetime against Lowe. |

I benched Drew in my roto league for tonight. I am guessing Counsell gets a start....
He is 7 for 16 against Lowe.
But Tracy is just 4 for 18 against Lowe, so maybe Counsell will play 3rd.
Anyway, I bet Counsell starts tonight in place of either Drew or Tracy. |

To bench Tracy will require an invented injury... on his bobblehead night.

We need to bring up a few fresh arms from Tucson just to cover the downside if Batista's ugly twin shows up tonight. |

Forward thinking -- hmmm... a trait not often seen in many MLB situations.
Who do you send down/put on the DL to open up the roster spot to make such a move possible?

I'd send Enrique down, give Cruz his next start, (god knows Cruz has not been overworked) and bring up a reliever |

I think Bacsik should get a good look SOON. Lefty.
Slaten looks like he's made the transition to AAA nicely, but it might too soon for him?
We'll probably see Moose Dangle up, too...

I agree about giving Bacsik a chance, but IIRC, isn't he off in the "World Series of Baseball" (or whatever it's called) right now? Anyway, I think he's unavailable until after September 1st.
Slaten should get a shot; call him up, even if it's only to have a warm body to throw an inning or two. And it's the "warm body" factor that will probably result in a trip up I-10 for Daigle...
I like Shoe's plan: send Enrique down (with orders that he not be used in the regular rotation, so his arm gets a rest), give his spot in the rotation to Cruz, and bring up a reliever (like Slaten). Aquino?????
EDIT NOTE: Oops, never mind. I forgot Aquino is on the DL...

Basic is off playing with Team USA
Maybe giving Slaten a try to see if somebody can get Drew out wouldn't hurt. |

Short hops
Reliever Greg Aquino, on the disabled list with right elbow soreness, will begin a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Tucson today, throwing at least one inning for the Sidewinders... Melvin said outfielder Jeff DaVanon will get another medical opinion on his sprained left ankle. DaVanon jammed the ankle on a slide into second base on Aug. 5.

From CBS Sportsline
Quote: |
Stephen O. Drew, SS ARI
News: Manager Bob Melvin says rookie Stephen Drew remains the team's main shortstop despite the return of Craig Counsell from the disabled list. Counsell, however, will start at short Saturday night and will be used at other infield positions.
Analysis: Drew, meanwhile, will get a few more days off than he had been getting, Melvin said. Keep Drew active in mixed leagues because of his batting average and run production at the shortstop position.

Regarding Batista's schizophrenic pitching performances...
covers.com today wrote: |
Miguel Batista (Arizona Diamondbacks) - What a difference a year makes. At this point in 2005, Batista was busy blowing saves as the Toronto Blue Jays closer. Now he`s one of baseball`s hottest starters. The crafty right-hander is undefeated in his last three starts with a 1.89 ERA for the Diamondbacks. They come in as +102 home underdogs tonight against the Los Angeles Dodgers. |
Even though the stat is completely meaningless, Batista has not been charged with a loss since June 20.

He's one of those frustrating pitchers that either sucks or looks great. I'm not sure if I'm read for another year of his "skills" and definitely not unless he's regarded as our #4/5 starter with 3-4 solid arms in the rotation to save our pen. |

This situation with Bacsik really frustrates me. The guy is 11-0 with a 2.79 ERA and some major league experience and instead of bringing him up when we're desperatly thin on pitching they let him go play in the Little League World Series or whatever silly event he's off at now. The man deserves to be up with the big club and I'msure he would rather be than where he is now! |

I'm with you Bob. A lot of people say he's not for real, but right now what do we have to lose? This year Gonzalez & Cruz aren't real enough to make a difference. We're not making the playoffs anyways, might as well see if he at least has some trade value. Heck his minor stats show he's at least "on" this year and merits a start or two in place of Gonzalez. |

Yeah, I forgot about Bacsik being away. Dammit. I does seem rather foolish given the team's situation.
With all the talk about the major league team taking priority over Tucson's playoff bid, there should be no reason they don't get Slaten and Dangle up here. The pen's starting to look like ground beef fer chrissakes...

Okay, I'm sure he's thrilled about being in Cuba instead of the major leagues... |

That is a mystery. Not like Byrnes has been absolutely tearing it up of late...
Figured that BoMel couldn't bring himself to sit Chad down on his bobblehead night, but Byrnes in RF? It's almost like T-Ball mentality... to be "fair" to everybody (as far as rookies are concerned)

Claudia thinks that Byrnesie's numbers vs. Lowe are dreamy.
