 |
|
I don't recall which poster it was, but someone recently lamented all of the pumped in noise intended to keep casual fan awake and to push sponsor product, and this poster longed for the day that real baseball fans could enjoy a pure game as they do at Wrigley or Fenway without added noise pollution.
Alas the noise isn't going away, but rather will become a clearer and crisper part of your Chase Field experience...
The Phoenix Business Journal today wrote: |
Fans headed to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers game Aug. 25 will hear something different, as the team launches its new sound system at Chase Field.
Team President Rich Dozer said the system will provide crisper and more balanced sound throughout the ballpark. In addition to a cluster of speakers at the centerfield scoreboard, units will be installed under overhangs to supplement areas that have had trouble getting sound in the past.
"With the current system there are areas of the ballpark, especially in the upper deck, where fans can't hear the public address announcer or the music," said Dozer. "The new system is set up similar to a concert with boom speakers, which will project the sound out toward the fans, solving our current issues."
The sound system project was managed by the Maricopa County Stadium District and financed by the district and the Diamondbacks. Hunt Construction Group served as the construction manager. |

christ. one of the things i love about my seats (sec 322, second row, first 2 seats) is that they're in a dead spot for noise. the pa crap is muffled and tolerable there. goddammit.

Well...In the upper deck, many of the announcements sounded like those Greyhound bus guys.

That sucks. The way it is now, half the time I can't hear someone sitting two seats down from me. I don't go to game to hear a bunch of annoying crap on the speakers, I go to watch the game and talk with people. We should start an anti-noise campaign. |

And audibly heckling opposing players is limited to those rare moments that amplified noise isn't drowning out everything else in the ballpark.

between the unnecessary sound and the unecessary plasma strip thing, people will now easily forget a baseball game is going on! |

I can honestly say that all the noise and other shit that goes on during a game is the number one reason why I only go to one or two games a year. If they'd shut that crap off, I'd go more often. The FO needs to realize that that crap is pushing more fans away than it's bringing in. |

As long as they don't turn the volume up any louder, I'm fine with it. And I'm not too old, I swear. If anything, I have hearing loss from all the concerts the last couple years.

My sentiments exactly. I watch the games on tv cuz at least there I can control how much I'm advertised at. Our ballpark is classless - reminds me of a glorified AAA ballpark. Whether we win or lose, the ballpark experience is crap, and I'd just as soon watch them win on tv.
Now Spring Training games...relaxing in the chairs with some organ music between innings. That's the way it should be here.

Honestly, for the most part I tune out all that stuff. The adds , the ribbons, the hot dog races.....(well, I like to look at the blond). I am oblivous to most of it. My biggest problem with the experience at Chase Field has always been how passive the fans are.
But the VOLUME of the sound system has gotten out of control. The last homestand or two....it actually, physically HURT my ears.
So I am not happy to hear it will be "cripser...louder..."
It's too much. And I am another hard rock refugee....my kids ask me to turn the music down because it's too loud for them. So if it's too loud for me, I can only guess what the older folk feel like...(those that don't have appreciable hearing loss that is)
It's way too intrusive.
They need to tone it down. |

I actually think all of the piped in noise makes the crowd quiter, like they're waiting for the speakers to make the noise.
Also, we never had the ability to develop our own ballpark "culture". Well, we did, and that's what happens when you decide you want to be family-friendly. Not too many dad's babysitting their kids running up and down the aisles are concentrating on the game and cheering appropriately.
But I have noticed that it's getting better.

Think you're on to something there...
Similar principle worked with how the Cubs were able to get so many joining in with Harry Caray's 7th inning stretch. SO much more effective than the way some teams would have opera singer recordings lead. If you don't "intimidate" the crowd... they are MUCH more likely to join in.
Same principle behind all the bells and whistles and loud piped in noise that they blare out at BOB/Chase.

The team is trying to build this excitement for a game that's just not that exciting. It's supposed to be relaxing and tense. Not pumped up. Also, it's like they think we're there to be entertained by all the booms, etc., instead of watching some baseball and yelling at the umps/opposing players.
An idea for the team: Play one "turn-back-the-clock game", where electronic uses are minimized to just the score and player announcements. And the could say "Tonight's ad free game is sponsored by...."

FYI...She's an ASU journalism and political science senior, who was picked for the job after working as an intern at the Diamondbacks Public Relations department.
"There are hardcore enthusiasts that don't want anything but the game," she said. "One time, a guy told me I sucked."
Casey Wilcox, director of game operations for the Diamondbacks, said Haire has a great personality.

Seriously hot. The jeans and baseball jersey gives me my own wood bat to swing.

Last game I was at, she was sporting a Quentin jersey. Which either indicates a fine awareness of our upcoming prospects...or perhaps that her job has other, ah, duties beyond plugging Baxter's Den. Maybe she also runs the sausage race, if you know what I mean, and I think you do.
