SAN FRANCISCO -- Shawn Green's career with the Diamondbacks appears to have come to an end.
A baseball source told MLB.com that the veteran outfielder was dealt along with cash considerations to the Mets on Tuesday in exchange for a Minor League player. Green, the source said, agreed to waive his no-trade clause and the deal is now in the hands of the Commissioner's office, which has to approve it because of the money involved.
Green arrived at AT&T Park on Tuesday afternoon and was seen on the field hugging teammate Craig Counsell and a Diamondbacks coach.
It is not known exactly how much money will change hands in the deal, or who the Minor Leaguer is. Green is set to make $9.5 million next year with a club option for the 2008 season at $10 million. If the option is not exercised, Green would receive a $2 million buyout.
Green is hitting .283 with 11 homers and 51 RBIs this season. The D-Backs had been looking to move him to give playing time to rookie Carlos Quentin, who has been impressive since having his contract purchased from Triple-A Tucson last month.

They've made mention of it on the D-backs web site stating that it was in the commissioner's office awaiting approval, so it must be so.
Let the party begin. |

Great move for the D-backs no matter what it cost. If they got the Mets to take most of the salary, that really helps the offseason options for Byrnes.
For Green, it is the chance to go to a team that will definitely be in the post season and maybe make the World Series. Although unlikely, I hope he does well there. |

Somewhere on a Mets board, even as we speak, Troy is probably creating a new screen name that is something like "ShawnGreenTotallySucks" ... |

I hope the Mets get to the WS, Shawn has to fill in in LF in Game 7, then gets the game winning hit. That would be sweet. |

Poor Gonzo. Absent Green, there is really nobody else but Gonzo for everybody to pick on now... |

Wow, I'm pumped. The amount of salary that the Mets pick up will be gravy.
Most exciting is that when we have 2007 lineup discussions we can forget about Green in the equation. Bring on the Quentin/Young/Hairston/Byrnes OF... |

I got a feeling we picked up between $5.5-$6.5mil.
This makes next year's projections quite a bit easier.

Not so fast with Byrnes. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he's moved this winter - buy lo, sell hi. We'll never be able to get more for him and he's arbitration eligible. If Young has any energy at all, he'll make us forget about Byrnes real fast.
And throw Estrada and Hudson into the mix.

"I think for Shawn and everybody it’s a relief that it’s over," Arizona outfielder Luis Gonzalez said. "It’s been kind of lingering a little bit. I’m sure it weighed on him. He’s an established major league -nayer. It’s a good opportunity for him. He has a chance to be in the playoffs. I’m happy for him. I called him right after I got here and found out."
from az central
Now we can start lingering on what they do with Gonzo for next season..............

Sweet Jesus, it's true. If Green didn't hold out for an extension or anything before he'd waive his clause, he truly is a very stand up guy. Cannot say anything bad about Green the person.

Yeah, me too. I got onto the D-Backs homepage and was thinking there should be something right about now.
Let's see how much payroll we cleared. Shoe, where you at?? It's time to start crunching some numbers.

Are those the "knowledgeable NY fans" that have never played a game of baseball in their life?

The only reason he held out on us was because he wanted to play for the Dodgers, first and foremost, and that was what it would've taken to get him to leave. And because it was the right time to try to extend that deal. This deal works better for him. He's in the playoffs, in NY, and not splitting time with a rookie. But, yes, I respect his public behavior regarding this deal.
