Hernandez yearns for Cuba, records, victories on field

When Hernandez arrived in spring training Friday, the first bag unloaded from his white stretch limousine was his golf bag, a good sign for him but an even better sign for the Diamondbacks.
Hernandez – a scratch golfer, according to agent Greg Genske – could not play golf for almost 18 months following knee surgery to repair his right lateral meniscus four days after the end of the 2005 regular season.
He believes he never was right last season, when he was 13-13 with a 4.83 ERA. He showed flashes the further he got away from the operation, winning three of his final five starts with the D-Backs, four of which were quality starts, after being obtained from Washington on Aug. 4.
“Last year was very difficult for me. My knee bothered me 100 percent,” said Hernandez, who was unable to do his normal offseason conditioning routine the previous winter and who also often skipped side sessions during the season with the Nationals to rest the knee.
But as for pitching with pain, he said there was no alternative.
“I love the game too much. I don’t like to quit,” Hernandez said.
“I have to feel so, so, so, so, so bad to come out of a game.”

Also from the article:
Quote:
“There are a lot of things I want to do in baseball. I want my team to win. That’s the main thing.”
And along the way …
“I want to play 10 more years. Win 200 games. Maybe get over 200 hits,” he said.
And finally:
Quote:
“The starting pitcher starts the game. He is supposed to finish it. No matter what happens,” Hernandez said.
The article, noting that his contract is up after this year, also notes the possibility that he might return to the Diamondbacks -- a statement attributed to Josh Byrnes.

Is It Next Season Yet?
Livan is an excellent hitter, for being a pitcher. I wish someone would send Melvin the memo so he stops asking Livan to bunt every time he goes up to the plate...
Regarding JByrnes's comment... well, of course he'd say that about Livan. You really would be a lousy GM if you go to the press in spring training and say that you'd never consider bringing one of your pitchers back...
That being said, with the commitments this team has made to RJ and Davis, plus the need to start thinking about reworking Webb's deal pretty soon, I'm quite confident that Livan isn't coming back to AZ next year...
Which isn't a bad thing either... two first round picks can certainly help...

Come on, lev, you have to see that BoMel is having Livan bunt not because he's a pitcher, but because of his above average speed for a pitcher. He's bunting for a single every time.
