Tim Leonard from MLB.com gives us the latest winter ball recap of AZ's prospects here. And he throws out this bit:
Quote: |
When talks began on the trade that would eventually bring Randy Johnson from the New York Yankees back to Arizona, the Diamondbacks reportedly took several names out of the mix before the Yankees could even request them. No Conor Jackson. No Carlos Quentin. No Stephen Drew. No Chris Young. And no Alberto Callaspo.
Despite any potential distractions, the Diamondbacks' second baseman of the future just continued to rake in the Venezuelan Winter League for Aguilas del Zulia during the postseason. Callaspo has gone 10-for-31 (.323) in seven games. He also had two RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. The 10 hits were a team high in the postseason. |
As far as *I* know, this is the first time he's been referred as AZ's 2bman of the future in the mainstream media. Respect.

Funny how the same things often stand out to you and me. That struck me as significant as well. |

It'll be interesting to see how the Hudson is handled through arbitration this year. |

Alberto gets a bunch of starts next year in lf, ss, 2nd base, and 3rd. O'dog has a huge chance a long with Byrnes to have a huge year and bring us back to 2nd season. O'dog put himself in position to succeed last year making pitchers work with two strikes, and keep his swing small, next year if he follows through, he's looking at big money, and mvp votes.
Dangerfield take: he'll be one of the most sought after chits, in Jul, if alberto's having a huge year in the Chone Figgins role. O'dog will be tough to trade, but we may get an offer we can't refuse. Gio gonzales for O'dog prediction. In the end we don't move him, because the team's to close knit, and winning.

The market for 2B is so cold that Hudson would have to hit 20 bombs by the trade deadline to raise an eyebrow. |

You gotta figure we're not hanging on to Hudson any longer than we have to.

Hudson is going to cost upwards of $5M, whereas Callaspo will be lower. So we should be looking to move Hudson as soon as Callaspo is ready to produce a little at the plate and be solid in the field.

Callaspo was mentioned in two seperate articles on secondbaseman....one at THT amd the other at BP (registration required)
From the THT Article:
Quote: |
Alberto Callaspo
23 years old | Arizona Diamondbacks
A trade from the Angels system led to substantial improvements in Callaspo's value. Diamondbacks coaches preached the value of taking pitches, and the former free-swinger put together the best season of his career. Callaspo remained one of the minor leagues' best contact hitters and started walking often enough to post an OBP in the Pacific Coast League that suggests he could hit near the top of the Diamondbacks lineup some day. |
A bit less positive from BP
Quote: |
......Alberto Callaspo, who had some superficially good numbers in Tucson (.337/.404/.478), but that was a batting-average heavy campaign for an oldish player with a pretty marginal track record. He’s going to hit for contact because he never strikes out and has an excellent chance to be a good utility player, but it’s probably too late for him to develop enough secondary skills to become an impact guy. |

What a fate... 23 years old, and it's "too late"...
Hang in there, 'Berto! We still look forward to having you on the team!

A little perspective on that article, it was an article of 2B prospects ranked strictly by PECOTA. Callaspo rated, per PECOTA, as the 7th best 2B prospect but with a low PECOTA score. Emilio Bonifacio ranked #10.
These are some of the most entertaining articles that BP puts out, in my opinion. The PECOTA rankings are somewhat comparable to general prospect lists, but there are always exceptions. Nate Silver will usually flag out the abnormalities as statistical outliers but he'll stick to his guns on some. Nate continually defends PECOTA's Dustin Pedroia ranking for instance, even going so far as stating he thinks Pedroia's pre-arb years will be comparable to Delmon Young's in value. BP ranked Pedroia as something like the 10th best prospect in baseball last year (while BA had him something like 85).
PECOTA also jumped on the Chris Young bandwagon very early.
Like I said, interesting reads. I was on the fence about re-upping with BP this year and these articles last offseason along with bringing Kevin Goldstein on put me over the edge on giving it another year.
