Am I just imagining this, or does the Sports Section of the Republic talk about Chicago and Illinois WAY too much, AND at the expense of Arizona sports?
Dan Bickley is from Chicago.
Joseph Reaves is from Chicago.
Paula Boivin is from Illinois (U of I).
I have nothing against Chicago, but I'm tired of those "guys" talking about it all the time. I'm tired of hearing about Da Bears, Mike Ditka, the Cubs, Ron Santo, the U of Illinois mascot, Michael Jordan, Harry Carey, Ozzie Guillen, etc. etc. etc.
I'm originally from Minnesota, which is only 500 miles from Chicago, yet I now know WAY more about Chicago than I did before, just by virtue of reading the Arizona Republic Sports Section.
I'm not asking to hear more about Minnesota; for that I can go online or call my old buddies back home. What I want is for the Republic to cover ARIZONA sports adequately, which they do not.
But I've given up. After taking the Republic for 23 years, my wife and I are switching over to the East Valley Tribune - even though we know that the National and State news sections in the Tribune are not as good as the Republic's. |

The Horror! The Shame! (I'm a U of I alum)
Must point out that U. of I. is former school of Roger Ebert (and Hugh Hefner), so not all journalists from there are completely lame.

My point is NOT that there's anything wrong with the U of I.
My only point is that the editor and the two columnists for the Republic Sports section are from Illinois and - apparently as a result - talk about it WAY too much. |

This is a legit complaint....although to be fair, perhaps they feel there are large number of native Chicagoans here in the valley, and that is good size chunk of their audience to cater to as well.
I do roll my eyes though when there is yet another Chicago Centric piece in the sports section. It IS annoying.
I amoriginally from NY. When I want to know whats going on in NY, I go to the NY Papers online. I don't want or expect Local NY news in the Arizona Republic.

Perhaps relating to the large number of Chicagoans in Phoenix plays a part.... It's also possible that they "think" citing a long standing "traditional" previous residence gives them more credibility--a ploy used when the writer doesn't have enough confidence in his/her ability to let the quality of their journalism stand on its own.

There are a heck of a lot of Minnesotans in the Valley, too, but the Republic obviously does not ever play to the Minnesota contingent.
I think, though - to put it politely - that Chicogoans tend to "announce their presence with authority" MUCH more so than do Minnesotans. Obviously l'm one of the exceptions. :)
Shoewizard is TOTALLY correct when he says that people from Chicago can get their news elsewhere - not in the Republic.
Anyway, not my problem anymore. No more Bovine. No more Bickhead. No more over-the-hill Reaves. East Valley Tribune here I come! |
