I thought I would update this a little bit, with some tweaks....just as primer prior to the moves about to come. As moves are made and the roster is changed, I will plug in whatever changes there are, and bump the thread.
A few notes:
1.) League minimum has been bumped up to 380,000, per new CBA
2.) I have Hudson at 5 million. Originally I had 4 million as an Arb Est....but I think he will get a multi year deal and should make a bit more in return for having a FA year bought out.
3.) I took out Andy Green and stuck in Robbie Hammock. Who knows who will fill that slot though
4.) I put back in the salary for he whose name will not be mentioned, otherwise known as Donut Boy, the Buffet King....etc.
Code:
Pos Player Salary

I think you should add Eric Byrnes on there. As much as all would like to see him traded on a "sell high" basis, it aint gonna happen. This team needs some players to appease the groupies, the fanboys and the casual fans.
Same reason as some "named" pitchers like Mulder etc etc will be signed, to appease the casual fan who work on a "name by name" basis so far as players go. You know, the fans who still want a .260 hitting LF'er with no arm in the lineup

I can live with that team you posted, but anyone who has any serious expectations for next year, better re-adjust...
I don't know.....it's always possible that Drew and Quentin keep hitting as well or better than they did in 2006, Jackson and Snyder continue to improve, Tracy rebounds, somewhat, and Chris Young has a breakout ROY campaign.
I realize that would definitely classify as "everything breaking right"....but if you look at each one individually, a really good arguement can be made for just such a thing occuring.
Beyond that, of course the team needs to get lucky with one of the young starters, i.e. one of the E Gonz, or Nippert, Owings, et al......sticking in the majors and having breakout seasons. The pitching part seems a bit more optimistic, or even an unrealistic hope....but it could happen.
our rally cry this year should be
REMEMBER THE MARLINS !!

Well, I know there is a strong likelihood I have to put him back in there....probably 80%, (thats what the edit function is for) but I'll fantasize for now about the team doing the "right" thing as opposed to the "popular" thing.

OK...after checking around today, I am making the following tweaks
Drew reduced from 1.3 to 700
Valverde increased 700 to 1.2
Viscaino reduced from 2.5 to 2.2
Cruz increased from 500 to 1.2
Lyon replaced Choate, and gets 1.2 also

I just updated the payroll figures in post one of this thread to reflect the trade.
1.) I estimated Davis will make 4.5 million in 2007, and he replaced Vargas, who I had at 2 million, so net increase of 2.5 million.
2.) I already had excluded Estrada and Aquino from the roster, so there is no "savings" from this trade on my spread sheet.
3.) Remember I had Hairston in LF, not Byrnes....
I come up with 51,580,000
If we assume a payroll of 60 million, than JB should still have about 8 million to play with....give or take a couple. BUT....at this point the odds are they WON'T trade Eric Byrnes, and therefore payroll is likely to be more like 57 million and in that case he only has 3 million more to play with, which means maybe signing a reliever, or a bench player.
Edit: Of course that simply could be referred to as 3 million payroll flexibility....money that can be absorbed in a trade as opposed to signing a free agent.

There has never been any public indication from this organization at any level that they intend to trade Eric Byrnes......no newspaper article, no readio interview, nothing. EB himself has said he might be mid season trade bait if he does not get a multi year deal, which it doesn't look like he will get at this stage. But that does not mean he will be traded. It has only been OUR speculation that they might trade him because they should trade him.......in our view that is.
I would need to see more clearcut indications that they intend to trade him before I would move "specumeter" past the 50% mark for odds he will be moved before the season starts.

I read this in Jack Magruders column today
Quote:
Brian Barden, Scott Hairston, Robbie Hammock and newcomer Dave Krynzel appear to be the top candidates for Green’s roster spot, although the D-Backs could keep two from that group if they opt to start the season with 14 position players and 11 pitchers. They carried 13 position players last season
I wonder with the addition of Davis, and having THREE innings eaters at the top of the rotation now, and with the depth they must feel they now have, if they feel comfortable going with 14-11 instead of 13-12
I actually think thats a good idea. More platoon opportunities that way, which is a good way to improve offense a little.
If that is the case, then does Cruz become trade bait.??
I'll be seriously pissed if they move Cruz. He has electric stuff and if you minus his best and worst outliers, he performed very well. The problem was the management of his abilities, and not utilizing him best. He needs to be a long-reliever, middle innings type of guy. The endurance just isn't there for starting, but it would be unwise to lose that talent.

And someone needs to get BoMel up to speed on this strategy; rather than the "one inning, one reliever" method used in the past. Granted, in 2006, the regular early exits by the starters overtaxed the bullpen; but even after the decision was made to move Cruz into the BP, and the game situation was favorable for him to go 2-3 innings, all too often, we saw Cruz for the 7th, Vizcaino for the 8th, and Julio/Valverde for the 9th -- without regard for the game situation.
The concept of the "long reliever" hasn't been a part of the Diamondback strategy for some time; and I have yet to be convinced that we will make good use of Cruz in that role -- even though he appears to be ideally suited for it.

i'm with dirtygary and eviljuan on this. he's got great stuff, and i think he'd be a great caddy reliever -- maybe pair him with the #5 starter, so even on those days we still end up with 7 or 8 solid innings of incredible pitching.
but... with how pitching starved the market is, is there a possibility of trading cruz for real talent? i wouldn't want to move him for another reliever or another back end low ceiling starter, but would someone pay real talent for a young, affordable starter with electric stuff?

I took Hairston off the list and put in Byrnes....accepting the reality.
However they might go with 14 position players, and Scott might still be on the roster in 2007, but I don't know which pitcher would be moved....I will update later when we know whats what.

I'm with ya on that.
It's also why I'm so skeptical concerning the Randy trade. I thought we were in a decent position to go pitcher-by-committee on the 5th day, and maybe even the fourth.
Either way, I'd be happy if Cruz was there to support the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th starter in a long inning situation.

The obvious updates are Randy's salary (minus whatever the Yanks pitch in as well as any possible restructuring of the contract) and it seems Julio's information needs to be included.
