|
|
Mel Stottlemyre, a Yankees pitcher from 1964-74 and their pitching coach from 1996 to 2005, is speaking with the Diamondbacks regarding "a potential fit," Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes e-mailed. Stottlemyre's son Mel Jr. is the Diamondbacks' pitching coordinator, and his son Todd lives in Phoenix, so the 65-year-old would seem to fit. |

We need a daily link thread. wonder what role he'd like, or perform?
My favorite story of the day, Hudson shakes off the sign, about his fastball being off.

I like the idea of bringing Mel to AZ.

Diamondbacks hire Stottlemyre
The Diamondbacks added a highly regarded pitching coach to the organization today by hiring Mel Stottlemyre as a special assignment instructor.
Stottlemyre, 66, will be with the Diamondbacks during spring training and will likely spend a good portion of the regular season in player development.
“We view him as a real resource for players and coaches,” Diamondbacks General Manager Josh Byrnes said. “(Pitching coach) Bryan (Price) welcomes having someone like Mel to bounce ideas off of. I’m sure the minor league staff will feel the same way.”
Byrnes said Stottlemyre also could be with the big league team for “series or two or three,” and could be dispatched as a scout.
Stottlemyre had several connections to the Diamondbacks, including his sons Todd and Mel Jr. Todd pitched for the Diamondbacks from 1999 to 2002 and Mel Jr. is the organization’s minor league pitching coordinator.
Byrnes said Stottlemyre also knows manager Bob Melvin and Price well, and that the club looked into hiring him before last season.
But Stottlemyre opted to spend another year with the New York Yankees, for whom he served as pitching coach from 1996-2005. |

Sweet! I like this a lot. I think it's a great time for Mel Stottlemyre to join the organization, what with the crop of young arms they're going to have to sort through and help grow.
With the likes of (off the top of my head)...
Scherzer (hopefully)
Buck
Torra
Eveland
McLane
Anderson
Castillo
Brown
Owings
The Gonzalezes
Etc. etc.
...on the way, pitching might go from a weakness to a strength for the club sooner than later.

Sweeeeeeeeeet. If the give him a chance to help out Valverde, they'll be playing Mel's Bells every time Papá Grande walks out.

I think Owings could blossom under Mel and become a STUD, and Nippert could start to pitch decently in the bigs.

You, of course, do know that the vast majority of BBTF are jerkoffs who don't get excited about anything that doesn't concern the Mets, Red Sox or Yankees...
I'm not sure that I share the irrational exuberance of this thread. First off, I don't think that Mel Stottlemeyer is all that as a pitching coach. I got a chance to watch him a long time in Yankee uniform, and even though I never had the opportunity to get close enough to make real judgments, he didn't strike me as someone who could truly "fix" a player... or who can do miracles for young guys. In fact, I have a hard time remembering the last young Yankee pitcher who came up and really blossomed under Stottlemeyer.
The word on Wang is that he learned the sinker in ST in 2005. Who taught him that pitch is a good question... but aside from Wang, the success stories of young pitchers doing great for the Yankees have been pretty much non-existent. Of course, the Yankees haven't had anyone come up the system in between Pettitte and Wang either.
Plus, I am not sure how much impact Stottlemeyer will have on the pitchers. We'll see. If this is an attempt by Josh Byrnes to address one of the problems that the Dbacks have traditionally had (which is develop stud young pitchers AND bring them up to the majors), and Josh Byrnes feels that Mel is the man to do it, then I'm willing to listen. But in the end, unless this move is followed by a more thorough initiative to evaluate the minor league development process, it won't amount to much...

I remember Mel as the pitching coach of the Mets in the mid-late '80s when I was a young Mets fan living in New Jersey. I agree with Lev in that we're probably making a mountain out of a molehill over this announcement, but to say he hasn't fixed a player might be unfair. He was with the Mets when Dwight Gooden came up and dominated. Plus, as I recall, the NL strikeout leaders consisted of, essentially, the Mets starting rotation during that time (Doc, David Cone, El Sid, etc.).

To be fair to the boys at Primer, it has been Yankee fans going back years who have trashed Mel. They have been consistent in their view. I liked the one comment that anything that pisses off Yankee fans is enough never to say an ill word about him. I agree 100%.
I don't think this is a big deal. I think it is more of a help an old boy out and give him something to do than anything else. I don't see him doing much harm, but not a lot of good either. Of course, if he adds one good pitch for one pitcher he will be worthwhile. |

I think this hiring is good. Pitching coaches are a good thing to have, and last year some of our guys seemed to lack a certain focus. (Vargas was the biggest offender, but he is gone). He could help this problem... |

we still have bryan pryce as pitching coach, right? and mel is just a roaving instructor or some such. so i can't see any bad in this deal at all. we used to have 1 pitching coach. now we have 2. more eyes to watch the kids' deliveries, their weaknesses, etc, and hopefully correct them.
do i think mel is going to become a savior and give us 5 CYA contenders? outlook not so good. but i just cannot see how this hurts us, and i can only imagine it helping.
