He won't retire, and unless Boston extends him before the season starts he promises to test the free agent market.

Can't imagine how good his year may have been, last year in the nl, with the normal parameters of a team that could score and play defense behind him.

I can't see the Red Sox not signing him for 08 <unless their ears are tired>.

For 13MM he's a bargain.

If we let go of Hernandez, then yes, it's good to sign Schilling. If not, then:

1. We block a kid "EdGon, EnGon, Eveland, etc.) from starting
2. No payroll room.

But seriously,
Webb
Johnson
Schilling
Davis
Hernandez/EdGon

Can you say contender?

Hilarious, that would give us the same top 3 starters as 2003. 5 years later and things come around full circle.

I like Webb, RJ, Schilling, Davis and Carlos Zambrano much better. Maybe we can trade for Johan Santana and make him the closer...

Oooh Oooh! And we can get Mauer for Hammock, Cabrera for Tracy, Beltran for Byrnes, Pujols for Jackson, and Carpenter for Cruz!

Please tell me that was sarcasm Lev. We'd have to give up so much to get Zambrano and Santana - prospect and $ wise

Sooner or later levski will catch onto this whole baseball thing. Just be patient with him. Laughing

yeah, because i don't think he's ever been right before

[/sarcasm]

It's odd how you can be so sure he's joking, but he's not, or vice versa.

If Schilling isn't in the Red Sox 08 plans for some reason <they're sick of listening to him>, I wonder if they'd try to trade him to Philly as he'd likely be willing to extend there as well.

Wonder what the BoSox would want in return - Garcia? Lieber? A prospect or two?

Schilling & Ramirez + cash for Lieber & Howard

Great deal for the Sox, win now deal for the Phillies.

Just to go totally crazy on the concept. How about the following:

Schilling, Lowell & Ramirez + 28MM

for

Lieber, Burrell & Howard

Still works better for Boston but doesn't totally suck for Phillies <although I'd never let Howard go if I were them>.

When I heard Schill was coming back for 08, the first thing I thought of was him wanting to join Randy for what could potentially be both of their final years.

But if Schilling came back and they failed it would completely and utterly suck more than I can even express, hence the big letters in pink.

I would imagine when RJ came back there was a conversation similar to the following:

RJ- "You know, I'd love to come back assuming of course you never try to get Schilling back here, ha ha"

pause, JB thinking 'would that ever happen? naah'

JB- "No, we'd never do that, ha ha"

Curt will pitch in Boston in '07 and '08, and if elected in 2013 will enter the HOF with a Red Sox cap. Curt's HOF stats are borderline based on the 2 stats most important to HOF voters: Wins and ERA. Rolling Eyes

He has 207 wins now and by the end of '08 should easily be at 230+. His win total will be fine. ERA will be his problem. Of the 58 pitchers currently in the HOF, only 8 had career ERA's higher than Curt's 3.44.

His 2001 WS co-MVP and the 2004 WS bloody sock legend along with his 3000+ career K's should pave the way in.

I would agree that Schilling should enter as a Sock, and have not dillusions that Boston would be stupid enough to let him slip by. If I was Philly, however, I'd be making a few phone calls about now.

Philly coulda had Schill back in '04, but they never offered anything remotely close to what it was going to take, which disppointing Curt a great deal. They and the Yankees were the teams he initially was hoping to land with--that is no longer the case.

I'm still psychologically scarred from that deal and can't bring myself to remember any details.

Kudos to Shaughnessy for printing all of the interview, (or so it seems)

Curt gets in some good shots there.
