It's been about a year since we last visited this topic, so with a classic World Series one day away what better time than now to check in with our 5 personal favorite baseball movies. For reference, BASEBALL ALMANAC features an exhaustive chronological list of baseball movies.

My 5 faves:
1- Bull Durham (1988)
2- The Natural (1984)
3 - The Rookie (2002)
4 - 61* (2001)
5 - The Pride of the Yankees (1942)

Just missing my top five would include such classics as Field of Dreams (1989), Major League (1989), and Fever Pitch (1989) with the last being included for its angle on baseball obsession.

Current favorites:

1. Bull Durham (1988)
2. Eight Men Out (1988)
3. Frequency (2000)
4. Baseball (1994 Ken Burns documentary series)
5. The Sandlot (1993)

Next tier include:
Field of Dreams (1989), Fever Pitch (2005), Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg (2000), Still, We Believe - The Boston Red Sox Movie (2004)

Although Baseball Almanac lists Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, I can’t bring myself to consider it a “baseball movie” since the Wrigley Field scene is so short and not completely necessary to the plot (Otherwise, it'd be in my top 5). Frequency is less of a stretch since the ’69 Mets figure so prominently in the storyline.

I'm with you on Ferris Bueller's Day Off (raising kids, I must have seen that movie 100 times) and Frequency, but I exluded those and Naked Gun only because baseball wasn't their primary theme.

I always liked For Love of the Game (mistitled on the Baseball Almanac site as For THE Love of the Game), with Costner and Kelly Preston. I couldn't help thinking of that movie while watching Kenny Rogers pitching against the Yanks...

Vin Scully's smooth game broadcast really carried that movie. I thought Costner's character drew quite a bit from Jack Morris.

Good date flick. You got baseball along with a chick-flick love theme that had appeal for both parties.

Bull Durham
Major League
Bad News Bears
A league of their own
Field of Dreams

I know some of you will laugh at me for including A league of their own, but I loved that movie. I thought it did a great job of conveying the love of the game, and I thought it was well written and acted by a great cast.
(Even Rosie did a good job in that movie)

A League of Their Own is a good movie and some of those girls made for great eye candy as an added bonus.

Mine, in no particular order are:

Bull Durham (probably at the top)
Major League
The Natural
A League of Their Own
Field of Dreams (even though I love to make fun of Costner now)

Also in no particular order.

Bull Durham
Field of Dreams
Major League
Bad News Bears
The Natural (But I like the book ending)
"Say it ain't true Roy."
When Roy looked into the boy's eyes he wanted to say it wasn't but couldn't, and he lifted his hands to his face and wept many bitter tears

I never really loved Bull Durham and I never really figured out why. I can watch it, but it's nothing special to me. Maybe it's Tim Robbins' delivery? I like him in pretty much everything else, though. These can change daily, but today:

1. The Natural
2. Field of Dreams
3. When It Was A Game (documentary)
4. The Sandlot
5. Pride of the Yankees
*The Naked Gun - Classic movie and it's a classic scene (or scenes). We endured a long rainout one time in Milwaukee County Stadium. Everyone was miserable & soaked, but as soon as they played that scene from Naked Gun on the jumbotron, people started playing in the rain. It was one of the best games I've ever been to for that reason alone.

I didn't realize that there were so many and have not seen them all but here is my list...

1. Bull Durham
2. Baseball ( Ken Burns )
3. Field of Dreams
4. A League of Their Own
5. The Babe

61, The Bad News Bears ( 1st one ), and Cobb are close as well. It sounds like I have a few to catch up on.

Thanks for the link TAP.

Cobb is an under-rated movie. Tommy Lee Jones does a good job personifying the irrascible HOFer.

With the caveat that I haven't yet seen Bull Durham or Eight Men Out (hey, sue me - you should see my unwatched DVD pile!), my top five would be:

1. The Natural
2. Field of Dreams
3. A League of Their Own
4. Bleacher Bums
5. Major League

Fever Pitch probably counts as a good chick-flick baseball movie, though Bleacher Bums probably does a better job at capturing baseball fandom at its most eccentric. The sequence where they taunt the opposing outfielder into climbing the wall is brilliant.

Just dusting off this old thread.

I just saw "The Upside of Anger." Not sure if it qualifies as a "baseball movie" or that it cracks my top 5 but it's pretty good.

Did we have the conversation before. At the risk of repeating myself and being inconsistent my top 5:

Bull Durham
Major League
Bleacher Bums*
Angels in the Outfield (the 50's version)
Pride of St. Louis

Close that on another day, they might make the list: A League of Their Own; The Stratton Story; 61*; Fear Strikes Out; and Pride of the Yankees. Can we count the Blues Brothers or Tin Cup.

*I have not seen the movie but the stage production (which was shown on TV as well) was great.

Does "Damn Yankees" count as a baseball movie?

Damn Yankees is focused solely around baseball...

I'm having trouble placing Stu's "Blues Brothers" reference, however... Wondering if he was flashing back to Ferris Bueller instead Wink

They uses the Wrigley Field Addison (?) address as their address.

Damn Yankees (or the year the Yankees lost the pennant) is a good one.

I just saw Pride Against Prejudice-The Larry Doby Story.

Quote:
Legendary sports documentary filmmaker Bud Greenspan turns his lens on one of baseball history’s forgotten trailblazers with PRIDE AGAINST PREJUDICE – THE LARRY DOBY STORY, narrated by Louis Gossett Jr., premiering...on SHOWTIME.

I give it a big thumbs up.

Field of Dreams, my dad like'd to hit in the cages more than I, spent a lot of time with him and my bro there....even worse we watched the movie together...Even worse, the guy didn't have a dad, even worse....just to have a catch...try being a man, and not lose it with the frickin music playing with your brain as well...Need a New term for those movies, Get ready to lose your nuts movie, and be turned into a emotional late stage pmsing woman.
