PHOENIX -- He's been around for all of the noteworthy moments in D-backs history, and thanks to a contract extension signed on Friday, Greg Schulte figures to be there for many more.
Schulte, who was hired by the D-backs prior to their inaugural 1998 season, had one year left on his current deal, and the extension added four more, which means he'll be with the club through the 2011 season.
"Obviously, I'm ecstatic," Schulte said. "I get to stay with a ballclub that I dearly love and call Major League Baseball games. What could be better?"
For the second consecutive season, Schulte will join former big leaguer Tom Candiotti in the booth, with Jeff Munn returning as the pregame and postgame host as well as fill-in play-by-play announcer.
"Greg is the voice of the Arizona Diamondbacks," Hall said. "The passion he has for the game and for this team comes through in every broadcast. We are very excited he will continue to be a major part of it for years to come."
A tireless worker, Schulte is always one of the first to arrive at the ballpark and is known for the preparation he puts into each broadcast.
While his analysts have changed over the years, Schulte has remained a constant. He has guided fans through the highs and the lows that the franchise has gone through in its nine-year history.
Schulte was there for the team's first game in 1998 and its division-clinching victory over the Giants the following season. He has called three no-hitters, including Randy Johnson's perfect game, and his description of Luis Gonzalez's game-winning base hit to clinch the 2001 World Series has become part of Arizona lore.
Schulte was also there for the 111-loss season in 2004.
"We've kind of done it all," he said. "There've been a lot of big moments. I've really been blessed." |

I like Schulte on the radio, he's not by any means my favorite, but he's alright. Now as for TV, let's hope Daron Sutton doesn't get offered any jobs on FOX any time soon.

I really like Schulte. He doesn't have a disc jockey voice that so many other sports teams are going with now. He's a normal guy that can call a game. I think he's kind of the anti-Thom Brennaman. Schulte ain't the best, but I think it'd be cool if he became more associated with the team the way other long-time radio play-by-play guys are.

I like his demeanor A LOT. Perfect for a radio announcer.
But he needs to improve his description of the action. He frequently just gives RESULTS, and does not describe what is going on AS IT HAPPENS. He announces radio the way you're supposed to do T.V.
So, for example, he'll say: 'Quintana swings and...... it's a home run!'
He should instead say: 'Quintana swings and it's a long drive to left! It's well hit! The leftfielder is back, at the fence, and... it's out of here! ' |

I agree with your point fundamentally Counsell, but what about his "Warning track...wall...you can touch 'em all!"? That is sort of his catch phrase, if you can call it that.

Yeah, you're right, he does that on homers. Maybe the example I gave was not the best, but you get the idea.
Here's one: On fielding plays, he won't say: " Here's the pitch, and it's a line drive toward leftfield, but..a diving catch by Vizquel" Instead he'll typically say: Here's the pitch and..... uh.......a diving catch by Vizquel! |

how about when the diamondbacks give up a two run double or something, he says it with no emotion, "a drive to right and thatll bring in two", he's obviously really bummed out by it.

I agree with Counsell.....if he were more descriptive of the play and less "results" oriented, it would be better. But he is a good man...very well liked and respected...one of the true good guys.
So go easy on him.  |

Yeah, the Gub'Nah is good. I love his catchhrase, and he can mesh with whomever his partner is and whatever medium (TV or Radio) he is morking with.

That phrase annoys me but shoe is right, he sounds like a genuine nice guy.

| i'm sure he's a super nice guy. he's also the very worst baseball anncr i have ever heard. he really, truly does not know the game and he rarely knows the player's names and what's happening on the field. i cannot listen to the guy at all. i can't listen to radio when he's on, and i have to turn the sound down on tv. i don't turn the sound off cuz then i get closed caption of his horrific calls... |

Me, I usually turn down the sound on the TV so I don't have to listen to Grace; and turn on the radio instead to hear Schulte's call of the game.
What makes this even more amusing is the delay between the radio description and the TV display, which lags by a second or two.
Radio: "Here's the pitch... and he swings and misses!"
THEN you see on the TV a swing and a miss...

I have resited posting since I hate Schilte as a baseball announcer. golfer is spot on IMO. Anything other than a fly ball to left baffles Shulte. I hreard him once describe a hit by Tony Womack as a "flare to right that falls in for a single". Then he said that reminded me of Womack's hit in game 7 of the 2001 world series.
On a complicated play he stutters like Porky Pig and you have no idea what happened until the color guys comes on to explain. My test for an announcer is if you can picture the game unfolding since Schulte makes so many mistakes and doesn't describe the action (as noted by other posters) he fails miserably at this.
Even when he tries to describe the action, he doesn't know what he is seeing there are time when I have heard something like "shot down the line. Clayton [playing shortstop] fields it and throws to first". He is just awful if you are trying to visualize the game.
His warning tract wall call is just stupid since he uses it even when the ball is well out of the park. You can hear the cheers that the ball has left the park and Schulte is doing his call that makes it sound like it is just going out. There is also the call when the ball doesn't go out. Warning track, wall, wall, er, caught by the left fielder.
He may be a nice. I have no idea and it doesn't really matter to me because I just care how he affects the game for me. If he is a nice guy, let him sell advertising. I don't want him to go broke, just stop announcing on radio.
I love listening to games on radio. I grew up with Harry Caray, Jack Buck and the Cards and then Bob Murphy, Chuck Thompson ("Go to War Miss Agnes") of the O's. Maybe I am spoiled, but Schulte has ruined one of my former pleasures for me. |

duh govenor, no one likes the guv...He's always sounded fine, prepared and professional to me. I actually like the way he sounds. As far as having a hard time describing the action, I've never noticed. Candy should be on the tv side more as he gives great insight into, how a pitcher maybe thinking, on the converse, Grace/Phelps do/did on the hitting. So far, all the announcers have been pretty good for us.

In his last several years with Chicago, the batter would be nearly around the bases before Harry finished stammering, "It might be... It could be... It is! A home run," although he was much finer during his younger days.

| Harry at the end was a caracature of himself. Making the drawing of him at Wrigley an appropiate memorial for Cub fans. Us Card fans got a lot better and have fond memories of a great announcer. |

There will never be another buck, sculley, Caray... Those mid 70 white Sox telecasts were nuts too. When thom first came up, him and Stoney were hilarious together. Kubak/garigola..
