Per request, here are some links to stats that are commonly used or referred to on this board.

This glossary contains definitions of statistical terms and measures that may be new to the average baseball fan and the advanced fan alike. The sources of many of the terms are Total Baseball and Stats, Inc., two of the premier stats services.

Here are definitions of most of the stats we use. All of the source statistics listed here are reported by Baseball Info Solutions. BTW, when you see a writer refer to a batter’s performance as -- .275/.338/.425 (insert your own numbers) – he’s referring to the batter’s BA/OBP/SLG.

Here are the MLB rules for those times when you have a question regarding a particular onfield ruling by the umpires.

If you have other useful links or definitions, please feel free to add them.

The glossary at The Hardball Times is also very helpful.

There is also a glossary at ESPN.com.

(My thanks to Shoewizard for pointing me in the direction of these resources.)

Sorry about that! I checked the other two links - don't know how I missed that one. Duh...

Bill James Primer

Not neccessarily stats, but ideas that, by in large, are still carried over to today. Created in 1988.

Since it's the time of year to start talking about mathematical elimination and magic numbers, I thought I'd share a website I love watching this time of year. From the site:

Quote:
For those new to the site, here's what we do: RIOT, an ongoing project at the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research department of the University of California-Berkeley, provides users exclusive data for each team, including:

1. Number of additional games, if won, guarantees a first-place finish
2. Number of additional games, if won, guarantees a playoff spot
3. Number of games team must win to avoid elimination from first place
4. Number of games team must win to avoid elimination from playoffs

These numbers are more informative than magic numbers, since they take into account each team's remaining schedule of games. More details about the numbers and the method of their calculation are available.

David Cameron's must read article on evaluating pitching

I mean it...if you are not very well versed in these concepts already, stop whatever you are doing and read this article.

An amazing post. Thanks, Shoe, for the link.

It's one I've saved to read again and study. It's an approach I'd like to see here when we get into the "let's go for Gil Meche/Ted Lilly" types of discussions.

One question occurred to me. Where do foul balls fall into his "six outcomes" schema?

Of course, the moment I read that, the little voice in my head goes, "DUH!!!"

Thanks, shoe.

If I'm looking at these numbers right, it would indicate that Batista wasn't much better than Vargas <better in a few areas and worse in a few>.

Amazing new toy at Baseball-Reference

The above link is to the primer thread about the new toy. Now you can neutralize players stats, allowing you to view them in neutral run environments.

Follow the link, and prepare to start wasting ALOT of time messing around.

OUCH!!

Sounds like 1 strike, 0 balls.

Cool stat, shoe. I played with it last night after we spoke. Interesting to note that Bob Gibson, having pitched a large part of his career before they dropped the mound in 1969, saw his WHIP and K's become slightly less impressive when neutralized, but his winning % improved.

So much for his "knowing how to win." His 108-79 career W/L record goes to 75-87 when neutralized. Me thinks his teammates factored heavily in the non-neutralized W/L record.
