Dayn the knucklehead today ranked Josh Byrnes in the bottom half of MLB GM's at #16, just one ahead of Brian Sabean. It's a relief knowing that Josh is running the show in Phoenix while Dayn innocuously types his lists 1,800 miles away in Chicago.

Dayn's GM rankings:
1. John Schuerholz, Braves
2. Walt Jocketty, Cardinals
3. Terry Ryan, Twins
4. Billy Beane, A's
5. Theo Epstein, Red Sox
6. Dave Dombrowski, Tigers
7. Kevin Towers, Padres
8. Kenny Williams, White Sox
9. Omar Minaya, Mets
10. Larry Beinfest, Marlins
11. Brian Cashman, Yankees
12. Bill Stoneman, Angels
13. Mark Shapiro, Indians
14. Doug Melvin, Brewers
15. Pat Gillick, Phillies
16. Josh Byrnes, Diamondbacks
17. Brian Sabean, Giants
18. Tim Purpura, Astros
19. Dayton Moore, Royals
20. J.P. Ricciardi, Blue Jays
21. Ned Colletti, Dodgers
22. Andrew Friedman, Devil Rays
23. Jon Daniels, Rangers
24. Jim Bowden, Nationals
25. Jim Hendry, Cubs
26. Mike Flanagan, Orioles
27. Dave Littlefield, Pirates
28. Wayne Krivsky, Reds
29. Dan O'Dowd, Rockies
30. Bill Bavasi, Mariners

Too early to make any lasting judgments about Byrnes, but he's one of the brightest young GMs in the game today. Nice work seamlessly integrating the wealth of young talent. Javier Vazquez trade was a masterstoke.

He does give some love. I think Perry is just hesitant to make him a top-10 GM in such a short tenure in comparison to those above him in that list. That and the D-backs haven't won anything under Byrnes*. Don't worry, 2-3 more years of Byrnes, he'll be top 5 for sure.

* Yet. It's a given they will eventually.

Look at the guys behind him.

Bowden made a few good moves. After all, he traded Wilkerson for Soriano.

And he got Felipe Lopez and Austin Kearns for a couple of relievers that aint much.

Dumping Vidro for Chris Snelling and Emiliano Fruto generally got good marks from the folks at Primer
Not EVERY move he has made are bad, and some are good. (OK...I really couldn't think of any other good ones.)

Hey, and at least Byrnes is ranked ahead of every GM in the NL West except Towers.

Isn't Perry a Padres fan? LOL

I think he used to work for Towers or something. Seems I've read that somewhere. I do know that he's a big Towers fan from past writings...

Incidentally, I don't think putting Byrnes where he did was a slight. But for me personally, there are very few GMs above him on this list that I'd rather have? Omar Minaya? Pat Gillick? Towers? Stoneman? No thanks...

I thought Larry Beinfest, Marlins will be in top 5, after all his team was in contention with $15 M payroll.

John Schuerholz is obviously No.1, with Atlanta winning 14 consecutive division titles.

No argument on first 4.
Theo is hyped.
Beinfest should be No.5

What are Dayne Perry's qualifications? Is he a former general manger or team owner himself? Does he have a degree in general managing or does he teach a course about it? Is he supposed to be really smart or something? Maybe he just has a job writing columns for some sports web site. Twisted Evil

Calm down gang. He dosen't even have two full years under his belt. He's doing a great job so far but it may be just a little premature to put him in the HOF.

I agree. JB has done well in his short time but them moves he's made will need time to see the results. If things work out, he'll fly up the charts.

True enough... Can't expect a mainstream beat type hack writer to "see" how well JB has done in getting the Dbacks ship in order. They need to see results on the field before declaring any GM higher in the pecking order. At least he put Josh in the middle of the pack, and not at the bottom.

No games will be won or lost by what Perry says anyway.

ESPN, SI, etc., the league, the media, and the world are East-Coast biased.

The only reason I like that is because I'm never afraid of being bombed by terrorists in Phoenix.

And there's certain irony considering Towers tried as hard as he could to have Byrnes job.

Unfortunately, that is a false sense of security.

Perry ranks pretty low on my list of columnists. I rank him below Gambo and Paola Boivin but ahead of Greg Hansen. Mad

I'm not fond of Dayn's consistent anti-Arizona stance but I'm not sure I'd place him quite that low if you're ranking on pure baseball knowledge.

Unless somebody's already read it and can talk me out of it before I order, I'm going to read Dayn's book Winners: How Good Baseball Teams Become Great Ones (And It's Not the Way You Think) to get a little better feel for what he knows.

I pretty much agree with you on Perry, TAP. He has this DBack hatred flowing but he is knowledgeable.

He has actually given some very positive reviews of this team over the last year.

The last time he really bashed the D-Backs (other than the RJ signing), was when we went on our "reloading" spree, and he was right to bash us for those moves.

But I have seen him say several times that our farm system will make us a threat and a contender over the next couple years.

Not saying that he isn't an idiot, just saying that he is a somewhat objective idiot.

Extremely laughable statement. I disagree with Perry all the time but would be very happy if the Republic were to hire someone like him as their regular baseball columnist. I don't even bother reading Boivin.

As laughable as Boivin is, she's still better than Gambo.

But it's sort of like saying: Who was worse, Harding or Nixon?
