Just out of curiosity. Say these guys make the team for sure.
Brandon Webb-Randy Johnson-Livan Hernandez-Doug Davis
Brandon Lyon-Brandon Medders-Doug Slaten-Tony Pena
Jose Valverde-Jorge Julio
We have Dana Eveland, Enrique and Edgar Gonzalez, Casey Daigle, Evan MacLane, Juan Cruz, among others. One of them will make the team for sure; Juan Cruz in my opinion would. So who else?

At this point, I would be surprised if we carry 12 pitchers on the 25 man. I'm thinking we'll go with 11. |

Yeah... With 3 "Inning Eaters" in our rotation (and Johnson as a possible 4th deep pitcher, depending on his health), I could see us easily getting by with 11 pitchers. |

How are our roster options effected by RJ & Davanon starting the year on the DL? |

Well, as previously stated, with Davanon on the DL, Hairston can start the year on the 25 man if they have not made a trade.
And if RJ is not ready till may, that is 4-5 starts that will go to one of the many candidates for the #5 spot in the rotation.
Really the upside of of RJ not being ready till May is pretty good...because this way they can choose TWO pitchers from the 6 guys or so they are considering for the 5 spot, and then have a month of regular season starts to evaluate those two and decide who to keep in the rotation.
(Hey,....just trying to take the glass half full route....obviously I hope RJ is ready by the Home opener)

Julio might be out of the bullpen... and in the school yard

Spare part
Even with the departure of Luis Vizcaino in the Johnson deal, the Diamondbacks bullpen looks settled.
In front of closer Jose Valverde, they have right-handers Brandon Lyon, Brandon Medders, Tony Pea and Juan Cruz and lefty Doug Slaten. One of the young starters vying for the fifth spot will likely land in the bullpen as a long reliever.
That would seem to make Jorge Julio, who avoided arbitration with a $3.6 million deal last week, somewhat expendable - and costly given the alternatives. The club has explored trade possibilities but isn't ruling out going into the season with Julio.

Ah, stu, the master of the rhetorical question...
That being said, there's always market for hard throwing relievers, if not in spring training, then at the summer trading deadline...

That's not rhetorical. That is real. 3+M for a reliever who can't throw strikes. Of course if Byrnes can get something for Green, I guess Julio should be child's play.
Too bad Base isn't at Primer any more. You could suggest Julio for Milledge. |

Funny...when I saw he got 3.6 million, I just assumed they planned to keep him and not trade him, because that contract indeed looks like a difficult one to trade. |

worry not, stu, you'd be shocked to know that julio is better than 80% of the relievers who signed free agent contracts this year... there will be a market for him....

Edgar Gonzalez to start and Juan Cruz for long relief.
I like both of them. |
