Nothing as yet on the Smokies website. (Not that that means anything...)

Here are his numbers from Lancaster:
Code:

Carlos Gonzalez:  Lancaster JetHawks (4-6-06 through 8-13-06)

G   AB   R   H   2B   3B   HR   RBI   TB   BB   SO   OBP /SLG /AVG
---------------------------------------------------------------------
103 399  82 121  35    4   21    94   227  30   101 .359/.569/.303

On the basis of his performance there, I'd say it looks as if he's earned a shot at the next level. His DOB is 10-17-85; so he's going to be 21 years old in about 2 months time.

Besides, the Sidewinders need the help, since we've been raiding their roster of late! Twisted Evil

Disclaimer: Past performance is no guarantee of future results.

Well, if he's gonna go Cabrera on us, we'll know by about mid-June of '07.

Put me on record: he's going to get his BB:K ratio together next year.

That was before I found out he was the next Roberto Clemente.

Good question. We should also hammer down a number. Cabrera had a 49:31 SO:BB in AA before his call-up. How about that [1.58]?

Gonzalez has the swing and bat speed. His stint in Tennessee to close out '06 will give him a challenge to which he'll respond by making The Leap™ next season.

Also, I must warn you: I single-handedly willed Webb to make a leap this year.

I will summon my demons and helper monkeys and what have you.

I must agree with shoe on this, Carlos is not a sure thing in AA. He has the talent but sometimes lacks the work ethic and the attitude needed according to some of his teammates. He is still pull happy and is vulnerable to breaking balls as a result.

Raab's post said that Reynolds also left Tennesse. They are promoting him to AAA already?

edit

Nevermind, I just remembered that he's on the national team.

Reynolds and Greg Smith are going to play for Team USA. There is a story on the Smokies' website.

You're saying that in the 2007 season, Carlos Gonzalez will have a 1.58 K:BB?

The kid that is sporting one over 3 now (closer to 3.5) in an easier league?

Amazing.

Quote:
Diamondbacks outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was promoted from high Class A Lancaster to Double-A Tennessee after tearing up the California League at a .300/.356/.563 clip. The 20-year-old Venezuelan also led the league with 94 RBIs and 60 extra-base hits, including 21 home runs. Cal League managers voted Gonzalez the league's Best Batting Prospect, Most Exciting Player and owner of the Best Outfield Arm in Baseball America's Best Tools survey.

Cyle Hankerd will try to fill those big shoes in Lancaster. Hankerd, a third-round pick in June out of Southern California, was promoted from the short-season Northwest League, where he was clearly too much for pitchers to handle. Hankerd led the NWL in batting (.384) and doubles (17) while ranking in the top five in on-base percentage (.424), slugging percentage (.519) and RBIs (38 ). The 21-year-old outfielder also had four home runs in 216 at-bats for Yakima after hitting 10 long balls in 230 at-bats for the Trojans this spring.

Hankerd finished his stint in Yakima riding a 16-game hitting streak, during which he compiled 11 multi-hit games.

"I don't really think about streaks, I just try to go day by day," Hankerd told the Yakima Herald-Republic on Sunday, prior to his promotion on Monday. "I put in a lot of work early, before the game. As far as being called up, that's not part of my job. I'm just trying to play well and help my team win."

Q: Mike from Jacksonville asks:
I am very excited about Carlos Gonzalez. What type of hitter does he profile as?
A:

Jim Callis: I'm excited, too. I had one scout compare him to Carlos Beltran last year, and he thought Gonzalez could be a better hitter for average than Beltran.

BA fawning over Carlos Gonzalez--I didn't know he had such good speed--I think I see left field in Carlos Quentin's future--

Double-A Report

Gonzalez eases way up ladder

LANCASTER, Calif.--Carlos Gonzalez wasn't worried about his ability to hit when he came to the United States as a newly signed 16-year-old from Venezuela. His English, though, that was a different concern altogether.

"I didn't even know how to say hi," the smooth-swinging Diamondbacks prospect said.

His first year as a pro at Rookie-level Missoula was a learning experience both on the field and in becoming bilingual, but he did show flashes of the player he was to become, hitting .258 with six home runs in 72 games.

"My first year it wasn't that bad because we had a lot of Latin guys so I could speak in Spanish," Gonzalez said. "But one day I thought, 'I'm not always going to be around Spanish guys, so I started to learn English because I knew it would be important in my career.' "

These days Gonzalez's bat is much more potent--and his English much more refined. That's why four years later he has emerged as one of the best prospects in the game and has leapt to Double-A after being promoted from high Class A Lancaster in mid August.

Gonzalez, who was hitting fifth for Tennessee after two spots higher for Lancaster, went 0-for-2 with a walk in his Double-A debut, and had just two hits in his first 20 at-bats.

Steady As She Goes

Despite the tough beginning, Gonzalez wasn't daunted by his move through the ranks of the minors. He's been through much worse on the baseball field in his life.

"When you're playing in my country, the people are so bad they are screaming bad words at you and throwing rocks at you when you make an error," he said.

With a great glove and a tremendous arm that has helped him record 10 outfield assists, Gonzalez does everything on the field with a graceful manner that is amazing even to Lancaster manager Brett Butler.

"I've been surprised at how easy it is for him," said Butler. "He makes everything look real easy."

Butler's already high opinion of Gonzalez was elevated earlier this year when he singled off reigning American League Cy Young award winner Bartolo Colon, who was playing for Rancho Cucamonga on a rehab assignment.

"If you put Carlos Gonzalez in the big leagues right now I believe he'd figure it out," Butler said. "That's the kind of player he is."

Prior to his promotion, Gonzalez had helped the JetHawks move into first place in the California League southern division with a big series against Inland Empire. The JetHawks won three of four games, and in the process Gonzalez got revenge against the team that had plunked him twice this year--the second time in the back of the neck--by going 6-for-17 with two homers, a double, a triple and six runs batted in during the four-game series.

"I think he's got the best swing in the league," Inland Empire manager Gary Thurman said. "I think he'll hit at every level. He'll be a big league ball player."

Gonzalez, who played for the World Team in the Futures Game, left the Cal League as the circuit's leader with 94 RBIs and was tied for fourth with 21 home runs. He hit.300/.356/.563 with 35 doubles and 15 steals for Lancaster and at age 20 was one of the league's youngest players.

After being named the Midwest League's MVP last year, Gonzalez struggled a bit to open this season. He found pitchers were not as likely to throw him the meaty pitches he feasted on last year, but learning to take pitches has made Gonzalez a better hitter.

"When you can hit they never give you any good pitches and you have to relax at the plate," he said. "That's a good thing for me because last year I used to swing at the first pitch almost all the time.

"The thing I've learned this year is to stay calm and don't swing at bad pitches."

Gonzalez fell from the top 10 of the Cal League batting race after a stiff back and weeklong layoff precipitated an 0-for-23 slide. He was injured when he twisted to avoid the Jorge De La Cruz fastball destined for the back of Gonzalez' neck. The impact left him briefly numb.

"It was hard for me when I got hurt," Gonzalez said. "I was a little tentative and my timing was off." The smooth swing returned just before his promotion, as Gonzalez homered in three of his final five games for Lancaster.

No One's Perfect

That's not to say that Gonzalez is without flaws, however. His work ethic has been questioned at times: He was benched after not running out a grounder earlier in the season and has been admonished by Butler on a couple of occasions about his lack of hustle. He still has a problem hitting changeups.

"Carlos is the kid that's probably always been the best player on his team, and I wouldn't say he's never been pushed, but when you've got that kind of ability, you're only going to be as good as you push yourself," Butler said. "He's going to determine how far he goes. There's a lot of guys who have ability, but don't push themselves. Those that have the ability and push themselves are the ones that can be great. That's why he will determine how far he goes."

Gonzalez said that he has worked on improving his approach, but his easy manner betrays the fact that he does play hard.

"The way I am is the way I am," he said. "I play hard everyday, but it doesn't always look that way. That's why baseball is hard for professionals because you have to be ready to play every day. You have to be ready for every game and play hard every day. Sometimes you're not going to have a good game, but you have to do the best you can."

But even at the times when Gonzalez isn't at his best he wows those around him.

"I don't think I've ever seen a person throw like he does," JetHawks shortstop Derek Bruce said. "He makes everything look so easy, it's not fair almost."

Too Bad the season is coming to a close for him. He was just getting back into gear and coming back from a horrific HBP while in Lancaster. Bill Murphy said when Carlos came to TN that he was still having issues from the HBP.

Lingering physical issues or just fear of another serious HBP?
