Dennis Green fired

Kent Somers
The Arizona Republic

Cardinals coach Dennis Green was fired Monday, according to an NFL source, a day after his team concluded its third straight losing season under his guidance. The team has called a 2 p.m. news conference.

Green was 16-32 and is owed about $2.5 million for the fourth and final year of his contract.

Green came to Arizona in 2004 promising immediate success and predicting 10 victories in his first season. Instead, the Cardinals made no progress, going 6-10, 5-11 and 5-11 the last three years.

Green’s tenure will be defined by his impatience. He started five different quarterback, fired seven assistant coaches and made numerous questionable personnel moves.

The Cardinals started this season with renewed hope. They signed running back Edgerrin James in the off-season, drafted quarterback Matt Leinart with the 10th overall pick and sold every ticket to every game.

But the team couldn’t deliver on its promise. After winning their season opener, the Cardinals lost eight straight, including three close games at home.

By the time the club recovered, it was too late. The Cardinals won four of their last seven, but that wasn’t enough to save Green’s job.

Under Green, the Cardinals missed prime opportunities to contend for playoff spots. The NFC was soft in 2004 and again this year. Seattle finished just 9-7, yet won the NFC West. The Giants, at 8-8, secured one of the two wildcard playoff spots.

They've played some real good football last 7 weeks, really tightened up and reduced turnovers..Turnovers win football games...for the opponent obviously.

Any word on likely candidates to replace him?

I am sure we will hear Pete Carroll's name quite a bit.

As disappointing as the season was, I thought the team looked like it was really starting to come together in the last several weeks; even playing well against San Diego -- as in, "the 14-2 Chargers." The Cardinals had a chance to win, even against the Chargers, which suprised me as I watched parts of the game.

I was leaning toward the position that Green should have been kept for one more year, to see if what had been starting to develop could have continued, especially with Leinart back from his injury. Oh, well...

Carroll keeps swearing he's not going anywhere. (So is Saban Wink )Not saying it couldn't happen, but it would cost the Cards alot of money to get him here. I think it would make for a good story, don't know if he's the right guy though.

Rackers could of kicked field goals, they might be in the wild card, but alas with the Cards its always sumthin. I'm excited for next year. The team played with a lot of fierce heart the last few weeks. Next year the titans, cards, and niners, put money on the over for wins.

I heard Gambo talking about it, so it must be true.

Yeah, but I'm not sure there are any other attractive options. I personally would avoid Martz & Marriuci - as I would have rather kept Green than bring them in. I'm not really sold on Mora (should he be released of his duties in Atlanta) and I cant think of any coordinators that standout as possible replacements.

The paper this morning mentioned that Bidwill is enthralled with Norm Chow, who obviously would be interested in the job. He makes sense, since he has a good resume except for the lack of coaching experience and has positive experience with Leinart. Also, since he is old and never has been a head coach, he doesn't have much leverage, so Cards can get him fairly cheap and won't have to give him too much control, and the Cards hate to part with money or control.

Graves & Bidwell had a news conference not long ago - Graves signed a 3 year extension as GM and they mentioned a short list of candidates that are coming in to interview: Mike Sherman, Norm Chow, Ron Rivera & Jim Caldwell.

Edit: They also mentioned that most of the assistant coaches will be retained; frank bush, prendergast, loney, kruczek to name a few.

Hey, eating the last year of Green's contract is one thing; eating the contracts of all the coaching staff -- that's another story entirely. The Bidwell's ain't that hungry... Twisted Evil

You mean there was something left in the valley that Russ Oritiz hadn't eaten?

CBS NFL pre-game announcers say that Steelers assistant Ken Whisenhunt has agreed to take the Cardinals job. Press conference later today.

Cards have the 5th pick in the draft. With QB, RB, and WR in good shape, logic suggests using the 1st pick on the offensive line. Most have Wisconsin's Joe Thomas as the best OT available. Wisenhunt being an 'offensive' guy, may want to go this way. Yet to be seen is how he will work with Graves and the Bidwells on personnel decisions.

Hope for the best.
