Hey at least the Giants have the actual financial resources.
Randy Johnson is still owed $40million.
How can any Diamondback fan mock the Giants spending ways?
To this point, they have spent within their means. The DBacks still owe Russ Ortiz what???? RJ= $40million. Schilling = $14million. Bernard Gilkey, Jay Bell and Steve Finley are still on their books.
Aurillia, Molina and Roberts are all quality additions.
Klesko...? Geez, can I hold out on my opinion on his signing??
The length of this deal is scary, but he will bring more to the Giants than Schmidt in the next few years. |

Ruckel, is that you?
While you bring up some legit points about Pot and kettle calling each other names, you need to get with the present. Since the hiring of Josh Byrnes, the foolish spending of the past is over.
So while the D backs have turned the ship around, and are heading in the right direction, the Giants are still overspending and over committing to a guy that is just a bit above average, and theya re going to be doing it for 7 years. There is also an option for an 8th year with a 7 million buyout....
The Giants have NO future as currently constructed or as currently being run. |

<Sigh> Can we all agree to just not feed the troll? The dude doesn't have a leg to stand on anyway, as far as comparing the two clubs goes (and that goes for past, present, and future).

I don't think the message came off as troll-ish, merely as a defense of the Giants move.
The Zito move was an overpayment but there's something to be said about the market and being a team, like the Giants, who had an extra 20MM to spend this year.
The Giants real problem is going to come as they find they have so many holes to fill and not enough free agents or money to keep filling them. Once they figure that out they'll lament the fact that they don't have an adequate farm system.
The D-backs were lucky enough to have Rizzo minding the back of the house while JC and he who will not be mentioned were putting the team in a financial nut-lock. SF was not so lucky. |

First off...who's Ruckle?
Second...this part of the board is for all teams, not the Diamondbacks.
Third...it is true that the Diamondbacks are still in a financial picke. I do like your new G.M. He seems to have a plan. The plan to go young is a good one.
Look, the Giants are putting butts in the seats. They have the largest season ticket base. They should be spending something. They have it. Additionally, once their privately financed stadium is paid off in a few years, the Giants will have more to spend.
Just thought it was funny to hear DBack fans throwing $ jabs to the Giants! |

Yes, the Giants have a large season ticket base, but they also financed their ballpark with their own funds, so it's not like they're rolling in money. |

No worries.
Welcome to the board. Sorry if you feel you got a rude reception. We had a nasty little Giants troll in years past named Ruckel....so we are naturally suspicious.
Please feel free to post an alternative view any time.
FYI, most of the posters here absolutely abhorred the way the franchise was handling finances and player personnell decisions. There is sometimes a sense of vindication that the team finally hired a guy that thinks more or less like many of us here do. (which is probably a scary thought for Josh Byrnes)
Barry Bonds in his prime helped cover up alot of Sabean mistakes. He no longer has that luxury.
Zito will probably give you guys 200+ innings of about 4 ERA and win 12-15 games. Thats pretty good. THe Giants are better with him. But objectively even you must admit that this is a huge commitment of cash and years to a guy who is NOT elite. And the contract that Zito has is going to impact who the giants can sign or trade for in the future.
If they get lucky with a couple of position prospects that come out of nowhere to outperform expecations, then the Giants will be fine. The pitching staff is young. and potentially very very good. But right now, Schmidt for Zito is more or less a lateral move at best, and the lineup is not going to scare anyone. |

Thanks Shoewizard!
This is a cool board...and I appreciate the chance to toss thoughts with other NL West fans.
I think it is great that this team is focused on fiscal responsibility and a drive to the future with youth.
I am tired of trying to figure out Sabean and his ways... |

Question for AzGiantsFan ... how long have you lived in AZ?
Man-law statute of limitations may apply. Just curious. |

No, after leading the league in attendance for several years, they have slipped to 4th out of 16, but still drew over 3.1 million fans.
They'll take a small hit when Bonds retires probably....but people go there as much for the ballpark as anything else. |

The difference is that while Jerry C overspent, Rizzo was stocking the organization with homegrown talent. Sabean is spending like mad, but not doing anything to bolster the the minors. Yes, you can talk about Lowry, Cain, etc., but still, they haven't been very smart drafting - the Diamondbacks had lower picks while winning and still squeezed out the best farm system in baseball - that's what amazes me about Mike Rizzo. |

Now that Mike Rizzo has moved to the Washington Nationals it will be interesting to see what happens with their farm system. Will Rizzo work his magic with them? |

well, they did sign 21 minor league free agents...
rizzo will need about 5 years to get that farm system stocked up.

He could have stocked it last season if he would have traded Soriano. |

That was more Bowden's call than Rizzo's.

I wasn't blaming Rizzo. The one thing about situations like that which drives me crazy is how teams will make bad business/baseball decisions for fear of fans "finding out" they've decided the season is over.
I wonder what the best offer for Soriano was last year? Likely a good deal better than the extra draft pick they'll get this year.
Just a thought, what pisses fans off more 1- teams trading away their stars before FA for future talent, or 2- watching your team lose it's stars at the end of the year because they can't afford to pay them market value.
Mr. National, I knew the A's and you're no Oakland A. |
