There's a somewhat interesting discussion on mlbtraderumors.com regarding whether Santana could or should be traded in 07 or 08.
With his CYA he has a full NTC for 07 and with a top finish in 07 he has one for 08, so he would have a lot to say about a trade.
I don't see a chance in hell that the Twins would trade him now, but if they couldn't extend him beyond 08 he'd sure bring in one hell of a catch for them. |

i'd bet the yankees give up hughes plus oodles of other guys for him. and i don't think any other team would be able to beat that.

It'll be interesting next year seeing what a team will trade for 1 year of a true Ace.
If you're the Yankees next year, do you give up Hughes for 1 year of Santana? |

i think the MFY would give up hughes for santana. sure, it's a year, but it's a year for them to let him know, very very clearly, that they'll pay whatever he wants, to him and to the next three generations of santanas.
he's the guy you break the bank for. nobody can outspend the MFY. they'll do what it takes to keep him.

I think McCray has nailed it.

Why woulndt they just do that a year later though??? Overpay, kiss his ass, whatever, and not give up hughes?
I would think that a team like ANA (or other team that needs one piece to put them over the top) would be more willing to give up prospects - to take thier one chance at getting him on thier team, and wining a WS that year...

i think NY does it just to get a full year to negotiate with him. and as good as hughes looks, the first time he loses in the postseason, fans there will want him gone. they'll say he just "doesn't have the stuff to survive in new york." and then they'll all circle jerk again about how great NY is. assholes.
but to NY, the value of santana is huge. and they've got deeper pockets than anybody. i could see them taking that risk. and a lot of people will be asking for santana from the twins, but no other team will part with a prospect as kick ass as hughes for a year of santana. NY can afford to do that. nobody else can.

Plus those 3 they acquired for Sheffield from Detroit.

Would there be a possibility that a team would know that Santana would entertain an extension and a team getting a 72hr window?
That would make the Twins rich <prospect wise>. For instance, if after next year it leaks out that Santana would talk extension but wants 25MM/yr for 8 years. The teams who'll pony up that cash line up the prospects to get him; Santana still gets to decide where he wants to go and gets a 12MM raise in 08 <assuming thats renegotiated as yr 1 of the deal>; the Twins get a much better package than if they were just going to trade him as a 1 year rental.
Sounds like a win/win/win. Then it would just come down to who was willing to come up with 200MM over 8 yrs and give the most prospects to do it.
For arguments sake you know the Yankees would be the top competition and likely the Dodgers <pending their salary constraints>. The Sox have the salary but likely wouldn't have an interesting enough prospect package to get the deal done. |

If it's a choice between Santana going to the Doggers or the NYY...
<gulp>
<swallowing hard>
... here's one time we have to root for the Yankees...
