Former Dodger, Padre on BBWAA Ballot for final time

What does it take to be elected to the Hall of Fame?

It isn't just putting up the numbers; although having significant numbers can't hurt your chances.

It isn't winning awards, such as the MVP; or appearances in the All-Star game...

Steve Garvey had a great career. Should he be in the Hall of Fame?

I voted no, and Steve Garvey was my all-time idol growing up. I would have killed another kid for saying a bad word about the Garv.

Although he was a leading personality in 1970's baseball on one of the three or four best teams of the decade, he was a defensive liability (how did he ever win a gold glove), his obp was terrible, and he was a lousy base runner. He was a very good player for his era, but if he had not played for the Dodgers, he would not even be considered for the HOF.

I voted no. Garvey's career numbers are very similar to John Olerud.

Garvey .294/.329/.446, 2599 hits, 272 HR, 1320 RBI, OPS+ 116
Olerud .295/.398/.465, 2239 hits, 255 HR, 1230 RBI, OPS+ 129

Is Olerud a HOFer? No. Like Garvey, he was a very good player but not an elite player.

If Garvey could get in then so should Grace and Gonzo. No.

Gil Hodges, Roy Sievers, Boog Powell, Mickey Vernon, Tony Perez...

Who let Perez in anyway. I guess the 70's Reds are like the 27 Yankees that everyone on the team should get in. How did the O's beat them.
