Who is the mystery apple of Byrnes' eye?
A #4? Or even a #2?

To me, these are the most interesting parts of the article:
Quote: |
With that in mind, Byrnes has been overly selective about a potential acquisition.
"We're certainly OK with them competing for these last two rotation jobs," he said. "To make them compete for just one rotation job, the guy coming in would have to be pretty good." |
Basically, Byrnes is looking for a #2 and not a #4.

Byrnes also called the minor league track records of those young pitchers "more obscure than they should be."
"It's not just graduating guys," he said. "It's guys who have pitched pretty well as a group in Triple-A."
|
Nice to see a GM who understand how to translate the pitching stats of the guys in Tuscon's rotation (especially Nippert and Edgar). Makes you realize he's a lot higher on these guys (along with potentially Enrique and Owings, even though the latter won't make the team out of spring training) that he lets on. Add in Eveland's impressive AAA record, and you can see why Byrnes won't be too concerned with having those guys fight it out for the last two spots in the rotation.
Having such depth at the backend of the rotation greatly influenced JB's decision to lowball Mulder, imho. Edgar and Eveland, for example, are very good candidates to outperform Mulder next year anyhow; why overpay for a guy with a shredded shoulder? Because he just got married?
