MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Florida Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis was arrested early Friday on suspicion of drunken driving, police said.
An officer saw the star get out of his black Bentley around 4:30 a.m. and urinate in the street, police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said. The officer then approached him, noticed signs of intoxication and arrested him, Hernandez said.
Willis, 24, refused a breath test at a police station and was being transported to Miami-Dade County jail, Hernandez said. The Miami Herald reported his bond was set at $1,000.
"'We're aware of the situation but we have no comment," P.J. Loyello, the Marlins vice president for communications, told the Herald.
Willis finished last season 12-12 with a 3.87 ERA in 223 1/3 innings. The year before, he led the major leagues with 22 wins. He was the National League rookie of the year in 2003, the same year the Marlins beat the New York Yankees in the World Series. |

Dontrelle, Dontrelle, Dontrelle, don't you know never to go drinking in Miami with "girls" named Lola?
At least he urinated in the street... my roommate once did it in the hallway closet

My friend once urinated (in his sleep) on my feet while I was sleeping on the floor. This is just the type of thing that can sour a team on a guy and prompt them to seek to trade him. At the very least, with the Marlins, they could choose to not extend his contract.

This is a pretty big deal. The way he was being marketed heavily by MLB to kids, and everyone always talking about what nice genunine young man he was and all......
too bad really, but maybe this lowers his trade value...... |

Further emphasizing my point, here is the end of the article from the LA Times
Quote: |
Willis has been Florida's nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award -- presented annually to major league players displaying a commitment to community and understanding the value of helping others -- in each of the last two seasons. He was married earlier this month. |

See what getting married does to you McCray. For two years he's citizen of the year but now that he's married he's pissing drunk. |

At least one path is open for his future:
He can be Wally Backman's pitching coach...

Smart man to refuse the breath test.
I don't think an org should give up on someone because of a DUI. They happen to lots of people and it doesn't necessarily mean that they have a drinking problem. It raises a red flag but by itself it doesn't mean its a problem.

I mentioned this in the primer thread, but one of the things I miss most about being an expat in Asia is having a driver.
Never had to worry about it, or moderate my behavior in the least. Those that know me know that moderating my behavior is not exactly a strength of mine. |

24 is still a kid, really. At 24 you're still under the illusion that you're going to live forever. You think that since you've never been pulled over before, you won't get pulled over this time. It just takes one time to you or one of your friends to make you realize that you may need to watch it. Second chances are fine in this instance. Just need to watch and see how he reacts to it.

i'm with all the calls for a second chance. he seems to be a genuinely nice kid, and for all my bitching he is a pretty good pitcher, too.
i used to drive drunk all the time, but i lived in alaska at that point. alaska's built for drunk drivers. there's like 6 people who live there, it's 3 times the size of texas, so you're not going to hit anyone. just snowbanks and trees. occassionally a moose, but at that point you're screwed whether you're drunk or sober.
since i moved to az, i have never driven with so much as a beer in me. too many people on the roads.
my first though in all of this, though, was the same as shoe's: maybe this lowers his trade value......

Note to self...come up to a stop light next to Dontrelle's bentley, don't ask for the Grey Poupon.
How'd you like to be the officer on duty
Officer on duty: (otd for short): in soliloquy form.
OTD: Oh what a beautiful, holiday season night. Aw...look at the holiday lights, the beautiful Bentley go by. Oh it who'd put spinners on it? Looks like its stopping, Why's the driver stopping in the middle of the road? The driver's getting out. Well, bet the butler's probably a high class, cheeky looking gent. Hope the beautifully engineered car, is not having any trouble. Maybe, he's getting the door and letting a beautiful lady out...second passes
OTD: HOLY SHIT!!! That's no gentleman, I do believe he's relieving himself. And he's doing it lefthanded......All of sudden loud, obtrusive sirens, spoil an otherwise, heavenly peaceful....the song Bad Boys also cue's up in another backrgound channel

LOL @ dangerfield.
it was this line that got me: "HOLY SHIT!!! That's no gentleman, I do believe he's relieving himself. And he's doing it lefthanded"
i was just chuckling until the lefty part, then i had a weird hiccup that came out through my nose. the effects were snotty. i felt i should share.
