The Detroit Tigers announced today the club has agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension with righthanded pitcher Jeremy Bonderman. Bonderman’s four-year contract extension will keep him in a Tigers uniform through the 2010 season.
Bonderman finished 14-8 with a 4.08 ERA (214.0IP/97ER) in 34 starts for the Tigers in 2006. He tied for the lead in the American League with 34 starts, while he was second with 202 strikeouts and 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings and ninth with 214.0 innings pitched. Bonderman became the first Tigers pitcher to strike out at least 200 batters in a season since Jack Morris fanned 208 batters in 1987.
“We are thrilled Jeremy Bonderman will remain part of the Tigers organization,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “He is developing into one of the top young pitchers in baseball and we expect him to be a big part of our rotation for years to |

damn. i just don't get what the tigers are doing. first, they extend sheffield. and now they're extending bonderman for what i'd have to guess is an assload of cash, rather than trading him for a hella-cool bounty of talent to boost their crap ass offense.

Ya know...this really brings it home.
Despite some impressive FA lists in the coming years, most of the really good guys will get signed first, especially now that teams see the market.
I think Josh Byrnes needs to adjust his strategy somewhat when it comes to trading for a top pitcher that only has one year or two years of control left. He HAS to take a shot, and be agressive in extending that guy.
Otherwise, he MUST trade for as many pitching prospects as he possibly can, and move guys like Byrnes, and Yes Orlando Hudson or Chad Tracy to get those TOP pitching prospects.
Either that, or this organization needs to get ALOT better at drafting and developing pitching talent in a timely manner so they can actually help this club by the time they are out of options. |

I agree it is becoming apparent that we are going have to trade value to get value <imagine that>.
That said, it doesn't really make any sense to trade anyone this year that will have more value next year <like Tracy> unless we have to. This year Tracy won't even bring us Maholm, after a good rebound year <hopefully> he'll be worth much more. |
