Sorry to keep using the Bill James Handbook, but geez, Boswell needs to write a book "Why Time Stands Still in February".
Anyway for those as bored as I am (the parties are great for the Suepr Bowl as are the commercial, but the game...)
So, James has a new stat. Manufatured runes. The definition is more complicated, but Reader's Digest (with the same degree of accuracy), he divides manufactured runs into two categories. The first are runs that are scored with the aid of intentional little ball strategies: bunt, sb, hit and run. The are called class one. As a general rule, if two singles are added together to make a run, that a class two. So a single, single (first to third) sac fly would be a class two.
The Dbacks were number 6 (all NL rankings) in total manufactured with 169 and in the bottom third in class one mr's (56). Lowest mr1 was the Phils with 33 (and they lead the league in scoring). Top 3 in both mr totals and mr1 werer the Rockies (198, 81), Nats (185, 85) and the Cubs (175, 99). Marlins (175, 69) and Dodgers (172, 72) were next in both totals.
Just one season, but like "productive outs" it doesn't seem that manufactured runs lead to much winning.
