One of my all-time favorite ballplayers. Back in the olden days before we had baseball on everyday we had the Game of the Week on NBC with Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek.

They have a Pirates game on and I forget who they were playing at the old 3 Rivers stadium but the opposing team had a runner on third with no outs. Ball hit and Clemente makes the catch up against the wall, the runner tags and heads for home, Clemente threw a frozen rope that didnt get 15 feet off the ground on the fly no bounce a perfect strike to the catcher for the out.

Both Gowdy and Kubek said they had never seen anything like and either had I. It was a sad New Years day when I found out he died.

A coworker of mine is from Pittsburgh and is a huge, lifelong fan of the Steelers/Penguins/PIrates. I once asked him who he thought was the best Pirate ever. He said, without hesitation, Clemente. I started to say, "Well, Stargell was...." And he goes, "No, Clemente." (I think the conversation was more, "that you have seen." Hence, no mention of Honus Wagner.)
