Tyler Lockman @TylerLockman D-backs have brought up left-handed OF David Peralta from Double-A Mobile, where he had an .839 OPS. He's starting in LF. |

I was just going to say "Who?"; but through the grace of Sean Foreman and the magic of baseball reference we can look these guys up. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minor ... ralt001sen A bit old for the leagues, but decent numbers. Another Venezuelan (the new market inefficiency?). It is interesting that he was signed by the Cardinal 8 years ago and is missing the 20-23 years. I guess playing in Venezuela. |

Played in independent leagues in the U.S. the last few years before the Dbacks signed him about a year ago. |

So David Peralta has been a nice surprise. He's hit very well since his callup. With 2 more hits today he raised his triple slash to .321/.345/.455 for an even .800 OPS. The below table is prior to today, as Baseball-reference has not updated yet. I was looking at left hand hitting rookies, age 25-27 in their rookie season, (so either a year younger, same age or a year older than Peralta in rookie season). Here is the full criteria. Very small sample size caveat for Peralta applies here of course. So take it for what it's worth. He's had a nice start. We'll have to see where it goes from here. Since 1961, expansion Rookie season age 25-27 Left handed Minimum 100 PA OPS+ min 114, maximum 126 (he came into today's game with a 118 but that will go up a couple of points by tmw) ISO higher than .114 but less than .154 (this controls to get guys with higher batting avg but not a lot of homers) SO/BB ratio at least 1.5 . Peralta's is almost 4, but if you set it at 2.0 or higher you only get a couple of guys, and strikeouts are a lot more common now than years past......

There are extenuating circumstances with Peralta and his late arrival in MLB, but usually guys that come up this late don't have long peaks. Not sure what kind of trade value he has, probably not a lot. I think he is more valuable to the D Backs than he would be to a lot of teams. But if the team insists on holding on to Trumbo throughout this year and next, then Peralta seems like the most likely guy to go to help free up the log jam |
