The Club is doing a wonderful job of marketing Uptown...

Why bother marketing when it's going to be Parraville next season?

If the LF upper deck area is called "The Sandlot", why isn't the RF upper deck area "La Playa" with buckets of Corona for sale? They could give it a Dos Gringos/Sandbar feel. I'm sure they would do just fine with beer sales, and might capture some of TGIFriday's traffic if they offer some fish tacos.
The Club could also realize additional revenues with simple, but creative and diversified seating options. For example, the area between the RF fence and bleachers that is currently handicapped seating should be converted to field boxes like Cellular One Field in CWS. Besides, is it wise to have handicapped seating where a good amount of HR's land? I remember an incident in PIT when Steve Finley hit a HR that injured a handicapped woman and he mentioned that placing handicapped seating where baseballs land isn't the wisest decision.
The Club also really needs to review the design of the ballpark, inside and out, and analyze what still works and what doesn't. It's been 15 years since the design, expectations have changed. For example, the "front" of the stadium - between Jefferson St and the ballpark - much like the former Patriots Square, looks great on paper but is a terrible dead zone in reality. It could be much more pedestrian-friendly with minimal redesign. Same with the northwest corner and the structure occupied by Sliders on Diamondback Drive/4th St.

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepubli ... shade.html
Quote:
Arizona Diamondback fans will get a lesson in solar electricity on their way to games this summer under a $1 million solar shade Arizona Public Service Co. is building at the west entrance to Chase Field.
The structure will shade about 17,000 square feet of the plaza and include exhibits on renewable power and energy efficiency, according to APS.
The structure with red-and-beige panels matching the Diamondbacks' team colors interspersed with black solar panels will shade most of the area between the stadium and the building that houses Sliders American Grill to the west, architectural renderings show.
APS will test electric-car charging stations and battery storage with the project.
Construction begins today and is expected to be finished by May.
APS will pay for the project, although the Diamondbacks likely will add more shade structures to the plaza at their own expense next season, President and CEO Derrick Hall said.
He said the team was considering a shade structure and proposed the idea of a solar structure to APS, and the utility was receptive.
"One big concern was with the All-Star Game coming (in July), it will be hot, and it can take longer to get in the gates," he said. "It also is a nice greening initiative for us and the county."

Boy, that is a good idea... seems like a win for everyone involved. Shade and Solar power are good for AZ.

Hopefully this works well for them, especially during the All Star Week. Green is good I say.

The problem is that they've been growing trees in that plaza for the past 12-13 years that were finally filling out. Hopefully the Club can salvage them and re-plant them on the barren pedestrian walkway north side of the Stadium.

tomkrasovic Tom Krasovic
#Diamondbacks are most affordable team in MLB for a family of four, followed by #Padres. #Angels are fourth, #Rockies 9th, #Dodgers 23rd.
tomkrasovic Tom Krasovic
Costs a family of four $40-$50 more to watch #Marlins at home than #Padres, #Dbacks, #Angels. Team marketing research.

I'm interested to see how the front plaza turned out. I got tickets for this Saturday and Sunday, I'm excited to be there!

I'm curious, too. I've got tix for Opening "Day" (with a 6:40 first pitch), sitting in my UpTown section for the first time.

Despite the removal of several of the existing, finally mature, trees from the main plaza between Chase and Sliders, the new solar shade structure looks great. It's really tall, with green painted arching steel trusses that match the Ballpark's existing facade; with red/sand color panels and Big Ass Fans.
Very well done.
It reminded me of a shopping plaza in Brisbane, AU in which a street had been blocked off to vehicular traffic and a similar looking shade structure was installed above the street, creating a a very spacious a comfortable pedestrian plaza that was bordered by shops in existing street-level buildings.
It certainly will make entering the ballpark a more comfortable experience during the summer.

The main obstacle that the Club faces in creating a vibrant atmosphere around the ballpark is the two parcels north of the ballpark. The main garage and south and east sides of the Civic Plaza. They are basically blank walls.
The Club should request the City consider taking steps to "activate" the north side of Jefferson St by creating street-level retail space on the south sides of the main parking garage and the Civic Center, something similar to the north side of the parking garage between US Airways Arena and Chase Field. Anything besides the blank walls and narrow sidewalks.

It certainly was much nicer today...
Another thing - the concession lines on Opening Day were atrocious. The lines were all the way across the upper deck concourse, and took innings. I know they're understaffed and it's the first game of the year for them, but it is consistently the worst game to go to. For all the positives of going to Opening Day, the irritation of not getting food quicker than 2 innings makes it a wash.

Today the venders kept trying to rip me off with change, happened twice in a row. One of the peanut venders forgot 50 cents (gave him a dollar tip and would have given him the 50cents had he not pocketed it), and the vender at Double Header tried to pocket a dollar (gave me $14 back when I was supposed to receive $15, had the other dollar folded up in his hand).

Musta been the same vendor I had on Friday - the guy seemed totally shady and I had to make sure my friend's kids got the right change back.
Or are we assuming too much in that they are accurate in their counting? Maybe they are well-intentioned, it's just the state of public schools here...

I knew something was fishy when he gave me my change back in $1s when a $10 and $5s were available, should have taken down his name but I knew better to double-count. He tried to justify the math, but then handed me the dollar in his hand rather quickly.
