Post subject: Moving to Nepal

While retirement life in Phoenix was extremely comfortable, I wasn't anticipating my experience in Nepal last November (a bonus was meeting up with shoewizard in southern China on return trip). So I returned to Nepal in April for an evaluation to determine if this still felt like the place I belong.
It does.
Quality movies will be difficult to find. Baseball will be especially difficult to see live, but the Internet will allow me to follow the results regardless of time zone.

Initial efforts on creating a Nepali fan base at the Dhagpo Sheydrub Ling Monastery:
Dbacks fan recruit--actually I don't think he has much concept about baseball at all (which may be appropriate for a KT product)

StL Cardinals recruit -- this monk enthusiastically asked for information about American baseball, and after telling him one day that the Cardinals had beaten the Reds, he responded: "Oh, We won!!"

Have found it necessary to postpone Nepal move, but have changed flight and will be visiting in November for a month. By then the monastery should be re-located about an hour from Kathmandu; will see how things stand then -- plan B is using Arizona as home base and visiting (tourist visa allows 5 months per calendar year).

You know John, having AZ as a home base may not be a bad risk avoidance plan after all. (If you can afford it of course) It is a nice luxury to be able to TRY living somewhere first, and then make the final move down the road if it is working out. Not a terrible plan B at all...

]It turns out that semi-permanent lodging in the monastery is not a practical situation for me.... for health reasons (never anticipated that). I did not know, but apparently I (along with my brother and sister) are susceptible to respiratory ailments. In my case, after living mostly at the Dhagpo Sheycrub Ling Monastery now located in remote farming area in Nala, I got a bad case of pneumonia--the doctor said that mine was a case of "community pneumonia" acquired by living in a closed community where a number of individuals were coughing....he indicated that the monks likely didn't have pneumonia themselves but had a variety of colds, flues, strep throat, etc. and collectively this gave me the case. After 4 days in the hospital, I improved greatly...enough to be released in time to make my return flight.... and will have to change way I do any volunteer teaching work there in future.
Anyway, following is link to photos... mostly of the monks, showing their human side--sports related, since most photos show them either playing futbol or doing a karate session:

Haven't totally ruled out original plan, but it's more likely that Nepal will be like a "second home" that I will visit pretty frequently. I have some very close friends in Kathmandu and the DSL monks are very much like "family."
