There isn't anything about the return we got that I would say WON the trade for us. It was still a pretty meh haul all things considered.

Now that the Braves really didn't do anything with Upton, it depends on how the players the Braves got from the Padres turn out, but if they are all duds and Drury ends up being an allstar.... well there is kind of a case.

Yes, we could have gotten more for him probably, I am not taking that into consideration at all. I am just viewing the trade as who do we still have vs what Upton/prospects do/did for the Braves.

Drury will need to correc the current walk to strikeout ration of 4 to 24, or his batting numbers will continue to regress and it could get ugly with regards to BA and OBP

Yeah, I'm pretty focused on the players we have and what they need to do to get better.

I figure the trade review only counted up until 2015 anyway.......Upton would not have stayed her once he hit free agency, and barring an MVP season, post season heroics, which wasn't ultimately going to happen, the team was unlikely to pony up for Justin once he hit FA

I do think that Drury will be a decent player, but it is too early for Bert/Brenly and Gambo to talk about him like he is going to be a star too.

Didn't really walk a lot in the minors either, not horrible but he was below average in that department most of his seasons. I'm curious to see what will happen when there is more of a book on him. I don't expect to see the slugging percentage stay so high for one.

When judging that trade, the "failures" of Prado and Delgado are pretty significant when I look at it too. Nice that two of the throw-ins are doing something (Ahmed to a lesser extent), but the key pieces didn't help the Dbacks.

Saw a comment from Kirk Gibson (who does color commentary for Tigers games now) about what is going on with Upton's struggles now.

Quote from the Tigers SBN page comment section:

"He explained that Upton is keeping his front side way too closed, which is forcing him to rotate his hips and shoulders too much, thus eliminating his hands from the swing. When he goes into his load, you can see him totally close his shoulder and turn his head slightly. Ian is a good example of a near perfect pre-swing load to me. He just pulls his hands straight back with no shoulder rotation or head movement."


Hope Upton gets it fixed up soon, because as everyone knows I'm such a huge fan of his and it sucks seeing him struggle like this. He is streaky but he is too good to struggle like this for an entire year.

Possibly starting to figure it out? Going back to about the end of May when he had a film session with Ausmus looking at his swing this year and over past seasons where they found something correctable he has been hitting better.

.288/.365/.545 over the last 17 games. Small sample, but obviously the best he has played so far.

Looking at the graphs page on fangraphs, his K% has been around 25% and the BB% has been around 10% lately, more around his career numbers.

It'll be interesting to see what happens going forward. Still likely to be his worst full season unless he goes on an incredible tear, but trending upwards now.
