The D-Backs have inquired about veteran free agent David Wells, according to major league sources, as another possible addition to their starting rotation.

From the NY Daily News:
"Potential teams include the Giants, who are now managed by Wells' old skipper with the Padres, Bruce Bochy, and San Diego. Arizona recently called, too, Clifton said."

How I imagine the inquiry: Diamondbacks: "David, I understand you are going to come out of retirement and pitch again this year." Wells: "Geez, with all the money being given to free agents this year, I'd be foolish not to do so. I need to get my piece of the pie." Diamondbacks: "So I guess you wouldn't settle for a discount contract? We can't afford to pay you much, but we are interested in signing you for a year." Wells: "No thanks. Have a merry Christmans and a happy New Year ." |

WithBoomers history with the D'backs I am not sure this will be the most favoorable venue. According to my recollection, in 2002 Boomer was negoiating with the D'backs. The Yankees, still hurting from the 2001 WS loss swooped in and signed Wells. Instead of just accepting the fact that we blew it ,Coangelo whined that he had reached a deal with Wells and shook hands on it. He explained that the way he did business a hand shake was as good as a signed contract (some business man). The fans of course sided with Coangelo and Boomer was booed when in Arizona. |

That was with JC. They're not the same organization anymore, so the infamous "Handshake Deal" doesn't really apply anymore.
He's still David Wells - and now he's 43. He wants more money than he should get from AZ, so I'm not sure how much interest they really have in him.

None of this makes any sense.
Davis and Hernandez will probably be gone to free agency after next season, so this team really needs to find out which starters will stick.
Give the 4th spot to Edgar, and let the rest of the kids fight it out for the 5th spot, and figure out what you have.
Edgar Gonzalez
Dana Eveland
Juan Cruz
Dustin Nippert
Enrique Gonzalez
Micah Owings
Russ Ohelendorf
You are telling me between these 7 guys they can't figure out a way to get 400 innings of sub 5 ERA? By keeping all of them and USING as many as they need to, they will not only be able to sort out just what they have talent wise, but also increase trade values for at least some of them.
David Fucking Wells.......give me a break. |

Too bad they switched colors, we could have re-used Ortiz's uniforms.
I think the D-Backs only interest in Wells is to drive his price up for the Padres. |

what tmar said. i think the front office is doing its due diligence and kicking the random veteran dog around to see if it's got a bite left. there really is no way that wells ends up with the dbacks... |

The Owings flag was the wildest one of the whole offseason. In best geico caveman incredulity, WHAT? Sounds like something is brewing with Texas and E. Byrnes. Danks or diamond, and Wilkerson, before okinsori for byrnes. Still think Byrnes could do lot more here, such as 35+ hr season. he's a 30/30 90rbi + ability., and great left field.
Wells, bygones be bygones, he's a great pitcher obviously, probably than zito or wolf ever will be. probably better even now
vizcaino, cruz and big papa for westbrook flag.

even it's for 1 year, I like Westbrook. plus I like him even more come trade-line, if we're not winning or other guys are stepping up.

doesn't matter how much you, or anyone, likes westbrook; you don't give up 3 years of valverde, 2 years of cruz and a year of vizcaino for one year of westbrook at slightly below market price. if you could have westbrook for 3 years at below market price, then you could at least consider it. but this is such a terrible trade idea that it's not worth talking about.

I agree to disagree.

I know this deal isn't happening, but I would guess it would take close to that package to get it done.
I agree it's not a good deal for the D-Backs, but quality SP is at such a high premium that it would probably take such a package to get Westbrook.
Either way it's not happening. |

Well to AZ is just as improbable as dangerfield's trade idea. Maybe even more so.

They just inquired about him. It's not like they made him an offer. It could just be Byrnes is checking out all of his options ans Wells just happens to be a free agent pitcher. When the article reads "Dbacks made contract offer to Wells" then I'll be shocked otherwise it's just Byrnes doing his job checking the market. |

Likely more of a media story and agent fantasy (to up the price) than anything... Can't imagine any serious interest in Wells.

If we're giving up Cruz, Valverde and Vizcaino...I want Roger Clemens in his prime...not Jake Westbrook <_< |
