Here's a fun factoid that may interest only me:
By losing Gonzo, Batista, and Counsell, the Dbacks have now parted with the last three remaining players on the team who also were on the 2001 World Series team. I find it ironic that the three of them are also the only three guys (along with Koplove, who became a free agent a bit earlier this year) that the Dbacks let go of this year. Makes it a symbolic clean break, no? Here's hoping the current team can win a world series in the next half a decade as well...
Just for kicks, that 2001 WS winning team:

Another random factoid: Nick Bierbrodt was a really good hitter...
Also, RJ, Schilling and Gonzo were all really fn good that year... |

Naw, performance had nothing to do with it. It was Proven Veterans who Knew How to Win.
Query: why did they never win before? Also except for Schilling, why have they not won since? |

Because the Dbacks ripped the proven veterans away from Gonzo so his proven veteranness alone wasn't sufficient. Watch him win it all in LA.
You reckon Counsell will hang around long enough to be on a third highly unlikely WS winner? The Brewers have a three years window, it seems.

Finley pitched an inning that year? I don't remember that. What were the circumstances, aside from a blow out. I remember Grace (02) pitching and doing his clown act on the mound. |

I was at that game. We were getting shelled by the Giants, and Finley pitched the 9th. Most of the crowd had left before the 9th inning started, so my friends and I moved down to some empty seats right behind homeplate.
I remember Finley hit a batter at one point, and those that were left in the crowd "ooohed" and "aaahed" jokingly. But I don't think that he threw a pitch faster than about 74 or 75 mph (according to the stadium radar gun).
That's about all that I remember.

Awww, but the D-Backs are still the only team with a reigning Cy and a former.
