I know Shoe had talked about this before but I didn't have time to surf through the history of speculation. What do you think it would cost us prospect-wise to get both of these players from FLA and would it be worth it?

Probably cost "the farm", and we can't do it.

But I'd want Cabrera first. And I'd give up anybody to get him. We need one big, legit bat that's going to put 30 out, bat over .310, and drive in 110+rbi's. We are loaded with above avg talent, but we don't ahve a superstar, unless Upton clicks.

IIRC, the marlins are looking for a center fielder and a catcher....

I think we have guys besides just upton that could turn into superstars... I'm mostly looking at Chris Young, or the two Carloses.

I believe they are also look for relief pitching.

Willis on his own I wouldn't trade what they think he's worth, but if we could add Cabrera we'd be contenders in 2007 & 2008 and on.

Willis and Cabrera? Meh. Unless they include Josh Johnson, Scott Olsen and Taylor Tankersley, I'm not even talking to the Marlins...

Wow, I just looked at their 2006 salary total <15MM> and projection for 2007 <21MM>. I guess they've got room to digest the Arbitration of both Willis and Cabrera.

I'd initially thought they'd be unable to afford the increases in salary, but damn they should be able to swing 21MM.

They'll keep their own guys, even with the arb costs, but won't pick up any FA's. And they'll let their own guys walk once they FA.

Their budget could change if they get a new ball park anywhere in the near future. I think they really need a retractable dome to eliminate the rain out threat.

It doesn't look like they are anywhere near getting a stadium with a retractable roof though.....they are probably closer to relocation then they are to a new stadium, which was basically shot down in the flames early this year I believe.

I agree. It shows there is more to a successful franchise than picking up young players.

Wasn't Portland a front runner for relocation before the season?

Portland hasn't been a front runner for a couple years now. I think Las Vegas, San Antonio, Sacramento, etc. have probably all leap-frogged the Rose City Sad

There's been renewed talks for a baseball park next to the basketball arena in downtown Miami. The problem the Marlins have faced is limited state budgets the last few years - basically a public financial crisis. A lot of cities faced that prospect and you couldn't assume every team would wind up getting the funding. It took years for Minnesota to finally approve a stadium. But the public finance crisis has turned around, and I think this is the plan that's going to stick for FLA.

I hope they don't got for the cheap version like Minnesota did though.

They need a freaking roof.

We don't need no stinkin' roof. The roof on the Metrodome took the life out of football and baseball fans in MN. I don't care how many rainouts and cold days they have to endure up there. An outdoor stadium is just fine.

I understand your sentiment of being very happy to be out of the metrodome and in open air. But mark my words, there is going to come a time in mid or late October where not having a retractable roof in Minnesota is going to be a HUGE deal.

Spoken by someone who lives in a friggin' desert! It won't be a huge deal in MN.

Hey, it's not the fans choice. I sat outside at Met Stadium as a little kid for the '75/'76/wheneveritwas NFC championship game against the Rams. It was something like -20 without the windchill and we were in the bleachers. I was in a snowmobile suit and two sleeping bags and I didn't complain.

I sat in the top row of Busch Stadium for a Cardinals/Redskins game in '75 during a blizzard and loved it! Of course, most of the section around us cleared out at halftime as they went to local bars to stay warm watching the 2nd half.

Generally speaking, kids are more resilient than adults and attendance will dip during uncomfortably cold (or as in Tempe, hot) weather in outdoor stadiums.

I was once at the game that was so cold that we had to use a lighter to thaw out the words so we knew what had been said.
