"The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Jeff DaVanon on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a sprained left ankle and recalled outfielder Scott Hairston from Triple-A Tucson."

I just realized how furious the FO must've been when he got hurt: They didn't even have a chance to fuck with his head. It's a safe bet they've got something good cooked up now. $10 says they convert him to a LOOGY.

And he's riding the bench against the LHP starter tonight.

IN all fairness, Gonzo has been steaming hot lately. Gotta ride him. Not to mention that Hairston was the only meaningful right handed bat on the bench tonight, in case you needed him to pinch hit. Unless you used Snyder...

But you can always count on a snark from Robert... Wink

Gonzo is August: .244/.326/.463 .789 OPS

He could use a day off...he has played every game since that first game Q was called up.

[running thru tried-and-true excuses]

The dog ate my stat sheet...
August isn't a month...
Small sample size...
Damn you, shoe...

Agreed that Gonzo needs time off.

Logically and logistically that would make a LOT of sense with Q's play and with Hairston rotting on the pine... but does BoMel want to risk another prima donna hissy fit?

"Counsell update
Craig Counsell was used in a designated hitter role Saturday at Class A Lancaster and didn't play shortstop because of a tight hamstring. He went 3 for 3 with a walk.

He is scheduled to join the Diamondbacks today in San Francisco, where he likely will be activated from the disabled list."

Does this mean that Callaspo goes back down or is Easley DFAed?

It means that he'll start over Drew whenever a PV is needed.

It means (in all probability) that Callaspo goes back to Tucson.

There's no way Easely(pv) gets dfa'd at this point...

Does the addition of Davis and Johnson to our rotation mean that we will carry 11 instead of 12 pitchers on the 25 man?

Synergy baby!!!

Both being "innings eaters" as well as Webb and Hernandez. Maybe this way we can still keep Hairston if Byrnes is not traded. Very Happy

With RJ not likely starting until May, I'd think we'll initially need 12 pitchers.

I'm not convinced that he will miss the 1st month of '07. That seems like a very conservative estimate.

After the completion of the RJ deal, it looks like we'll have two open spots on the 40 man. Maybe we add a lefty reliever?

Any thoughts?

i thought slaten looked pretty decent last season. and he's pretty much a lock to make the pen, right?

Edit to add: we could get more lefties, of course, but i hate to see the organization bring in the token old or ineffective lefty every damn season. i'd rather just roll with the kids than have another mulholland.

Slaten looked pretty solid to me and I'm assuming that he's a lock for the 25 man. It would be nice to have another effective LHP in the pen though.

I like Slaten, and I would think he will be on the team, but I don't think he can afford to have a crappy spring. There are alot of bullpen candidates

Assuming Slaten the lefty gets a spot, here is your pitching staff if they make no further changes or trades:

Pen:
Valverde
Medders
Julio
Lyon
Cruz
Slaten

Starters:
Webb
RJ
Livan
Davis
Edgar

Thats 11.

Then you still have :

Pena
Enrique
Eveland

Could all 3 of them start the year in the minors? Perhaps, but I think they want Pena on the big club too. So maybe Pena is in the pen, and they go with 12 pitchers, and Enrique and Eveland start the year in Tucson.

In reality, I would be very surprised if one of Julio, Lyon or Cruz were not traded. They make the most, and there is clearly a logjam in the bullpen. If they are looking to free up some money, Julio is probably the best choice to trade, as he will make about 2.5 million in 2007. Prior to the Viscaino trade, I just assumed that Julio would be the one to go, but he must be harder to move, not surprisingly.

Keeping with the RJ trade, how about a full circle Cruz back to the Cubbies ( along with Byrnes ) package for Scott Eyre and maybe Donald Veal or Sean Gallagher?

Maybe that is asking too much.
